Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other.  We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Lead Digital Architect – Product Information Management (PIM / Akeneo)

Role Definition

The Digital Architect – Product Information Management (PIM) is responsible for solution‑ and component‑level architecture for PIM capabilities within Cat Digital’s commerce and experience ecosystem. This role translates business and product requirements into scalable, secure, and operable solution designs, while actively augmenting delivery teams through hands‑on architectural contribution.

Operating under the guidance of a System Architect, this role ensures that PIM solutions—such as Akeneo or equivalent platforms—are designed and implemented in alignment with enterprise architecture standards, integration patterns, and non‑functional requirements. The role is delivery‑oriented, with accountability extending beyond design reviews to direct engagement throughout implementation.

Key Responsibilities

Solution & Functional Architecture

  • Decompose business and product requirements into clear, implementable architectural components aligned to platform and enterprise standards.
  • Design solution‑level architectures for PIM capabilities, including data models, interfaces, workflows, and integration patterns.
  • Perform architecture trade‑off analysis (build vs buy, cost vs scalability, speed vs sustainability).
  • Define and document non‑functional requirements including scalability, performance, security, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Produce and maintain architecture artifacts such as solution diagrams, interface contracts, and architectural decision records (ADRs).

Architecture Governance & Stakeholder Alignment

  • Participate in and lead solution architecture reviews and design walkthroughs.
  • Act as a bridge between Product, Engineering, and System Architecture, ensuring shared understanding and alignment.
  • Provide ongoing architectural guidance to delivery teams to ensure design intent is realized in implementation.
  • Identify solution‑level architectural risks and recommend mitigation strategies.

Technical Architecture & Delivery Augmentation

Cloud & Platform Architecture

  • Design and guide PIM solutions on cloud‑native platforms (AWS preferred).
  • Apply best practices for containerized and cloud‑native architectures, including scalability, resilience, and cost efficiency.

API, Integration & Microservices

  • Design RESTful APIs and integration patterns for PIM consumers and downstream systems.
  • Apply event‑driven and asynchronous integration patterns where appropriate.
  • Define service boundaries, data ownership, and resilience patterns (retries, idempotency, circuit breakers).

Data & Integration Architecture

  • Design data flows and integrations across PIM, Commerce, CMS, Search, and downstream enterprise systems.
  • Define and govern canonical data models and domain events.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and synchronization across platforms.

CI/CD, Operations & Security

  • Collaborate with platform and DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines and deployment strategies.
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts where applicable.
  • Embed security‑by‑design, including authentication, authorization, secure integrations, and compliance considerations.
  • Ensure observability and operational readiness, including logging, monitoring, and supportability.

Critical Skills & Knowledge (Skills‑Based Alignment)

Architecture & Functional Skills

  • Requirements decomposition and solution structuring
  • Solution‑level trade‑off analysis and decision‑making
  • Non‑functional architecture design
  • Architecture documentation and governance
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with Product, Engineering, and Architecture stakeholders

Technical Skills

  • Cloud‑native architecture (AWS preferred)
  • API design and integration patterns
  • Microservices and event‑driven architectures
  • Data integration and synchronization patterns
  • CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code concepts
  • Secure, observable, and operable system design

Domain Experience (Preferred)

  • Product Information Management (PIM) platforms (e.g., Akeneo or equivalent)
  • Commerce / eCommerce platforms
  • Content Management Systems (Adobe ecosystem preferred)
  • Search platforms and experience delivery integrations

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Typically 8–12 years of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, or platform delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to enterprise‑scale digital platforms in a hands‑on architectural role.

Role Expectations

  • Operates at solution and component scope, with accountability for execution‑ready architectures.
  • Actively participates in delivery lifecycle, not limited to advisory or review functions.
  • Supports and complements the System Architect by ensuring architectural decisions are implemented correctly and consistently.
  • Influences through technical depth, clarity of communication, and delivery partnership.
