Job Title:

Reg Radiation Therapist - Cancer Ctr-Rad Oncology

Job Summary:

To perform technical tasks associated with the localization of tumors and administration of radiation therapy to patients; operate X-ray imaging machine, perform computerized tomography or CT scan, and adjust linear accelerator during simulation phase; position patient and deliver prescribed dosage; record treatment administered on patient chart. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Graduate of a Radiation Therapy program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  ARRT registration in Radiation Therapy; Mississippi registration; or board eligible and certified within 6 months.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of radiation protection and quality assurance, clinical concepts in Radiation Oncology, treatment planning, treatment delivery, and patient care and education.

Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills.

Ability to maintain accurate, detailed records. Ability to alleviate patient anxiety.

Ability to ensure compliance with radiation safety principles and/or infection control standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares examination room; explains procedures and assists patients in preparing for examination and treatment; reviews set-up of equipment, patient positioning, and dosage calculations for accuracy prior to administration of radiation treatments.
  • Assists Radiation Oncologist and Dosimetrist in the development of a treatment plan.
  • Ensures compliance with the principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others.
  • Monitors patient condition during treatment; provides emotional support to patient.
  • Maintains detailed records of patient treatment such as radiation dosage, total amount used to date, area treated, equipment settings, and patient reactions.
  • Maintains a clean work area; checks and maintains equipment in safe and satisfactory working order; reports defects or deficiencies for adjustment and repair.

    Physical and Environmental Demands
    Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
