A Brief Overview
Head of Underwriting & Claims for Southeast Asia will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of underwriting and claims standards, policies, and quality controls, ensuring alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements. The position drives excellence in risk assessment, claim management, and process improvements, while fostering strong client relationships and supporting profitable business growth across the region.

What you will do

  • Underwriting Leadership: Oversee Underwriting Standards and Policies for Southeast Asia markets. Develop, implement, and monitor underwriting standards, policies, and procedures for the markets, aligning with RGA practices, local and international trends as well as client requirements.
  • Underwriting Quality Excellence: Evaluate and steer advancement of underwriting quality for new and ongoing business, provide recommendations on risk assessment, monitor clients’ risk selection, and drive collaborations on process improvements to ensure alignment and compliance with best practices.
  • Facultative and Automatic Business Oversight: Analyze and optimize placement of facultative business, ensure effective use of authority limits and timeliness, liaise with retrocessionaires for additional capacity, and leverage facultative services to secure automatic accounts.
  • Claim Management Leadership: Drive the vision and strategic direction of claims management across Southeast Asia markets, ensuring robust governance, operational excellence, and consistent application of best practices. Develop and oversee the implementation of claims policies, procedures, and quality control measures that align with company objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Claims Quality Excellence: Review and monitor claims processes for efficiency, accuracy, and client satisfaction. Establish performance metrics and lead reporting systems to monitor claims outcomes, turnaround times, and compliance with service level agreements.
  • Product Development & Innovations: Collaborate closely with Pricing team to ensure a holistic approach to risk assessment and product development, leveraging claims data to enhance underwriting guidelines and strategic decisions. Prepare and present regular claims portfolio analyses, highlighting trends, risks, opportunities, and recommendations for senior leadership and key clients. Support the local markets and clients to develop new underwriting and claims processes leveraging data and insights from clients and the markets.
  • Client Relationships: Build and sustain strong business relationships with Chief Underwriters, Underwriting Managers, reinsurance decision makers, and clients, to understand their underwriting and claims needs and deliver tailored solutions. Frequent travel, approximately for one week each month, to major Southeast Asia markets is required. Drive collaborations with clients to identify and implement best practices for claims handling.
  • Industry Engagement: Build and maintain networks with external partners, legal advisors, and industry bodies to stay abreast of emerging trends and evolving challenges in underwriting and claims management.
  • Team Development and Training: Ensure ongoing training, coaching, and professional development for team members, supervise the Underwriting and Claims team, and establish succession plans to support organizational growth.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) with relevant industry qualifications required required.
  • 15+ Years of life underwriting experience or equivalent in insurance or reinsurance companies required.
  • Solid Operations/case management experience required.
  • Management experience leading a medium sized team required.
  • Experience in product development and enhancement preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance principles, underwriting policies, procedures and guidelines for dealing with risk analysis required required.
  • Advanced knowledge of life insurance and health products required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey information in a way that is meaningful and well received by stakeholders and team members required.
  • Strong ability to adapt new methods; work under tight deadlines and stressful conditions required.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously required.
  • Strong ability to foster a teamwork and customer service focused environment with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional and technical disciplines required.
  • Strong influencing and problem-solving skills – an innovative thinker and a solution driven individual required
  • Ability to implement departmental vision and goals that result in achievement and success through collaboration, creative thinking, and focus required.
