Job Summary:

Evaluate and administer therapeutic and diagnostic respiratory care and life support to patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. To consult with physicians concerning the development and modification of patient care plans.

Education & Experience

Must be actively enrolled and progressing full time in an accredited respiratory care practitioner program and have completed three semesters of clinical coursework. Must have a minim GPA of 2.5. 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: 
 None 
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Set-up and monitoring of low-flow oxygen (e.g., less than or equal to 6 LPM)

Non-exotic aerosol therapy (bronchodilators, antichollnagics, etc.)

Hyperinflation and airway clearance therapy

Electrocardiograms

Equipment cleaning, stocking, transporting, etc.

Once an RCP student is certified in Basic Life Support, they may assist in cardiorespiratory arrests at the discretion of UMMC.

Responsibilities: 
 

  • Evaluates patients through interviews, limited physical exams, and conducting diagnostic tests; consults with physicians to address patient care respiratory therapy needs. 
  • Operates and monitors respiratory equipment such as medical gas delivery apparatus, incentive breathing/hyperinflating devices, environmental control systems and aerosol devices 
  •  Administers medical gases, humidification, aerosols and no-exotic respiratory medications; maintains clearance of patient's natural and artificial airways; and provides emergency cardiopulmonary assistance. 
  • Monitors patients physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs. 
  • Educates patient and family members on the use of breathing exercises and use of medications. 
  • Inspects, sanitizes, tests and maintains respiratory equipment.  Maintains applicable records and documentation.  Ensures compliance with workplace safety, environmental and/or infection control.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional working hours beyond regularly scheduled  hours, no travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds, frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, frequent lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting/carrying up to100 pounds, occasional lifting/carrying 100 pounds or more, frequent climbing, frequent crawling, constant crouching/stooping, no driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking.  (Occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
