Job Title: Lead, Database Engineering

Current Need

The Lead, Database Engineering role is responsible for designing, implementing, and governing enterprise database solutions that enable reliable, secure, and high‑performing business applications. This role establishes database architecture standards and quality practices, translates complex business requirements into scalable data models, and provides technical leadership across the full database lifecycle. Operating with significant independence, the role addresses highly complex data challenges, applies advanced engineering principles, and delivers innovative database solutions that support critical business operations and evolving client needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes database management systems, standards, guidelines and quality assurance for database deliverables, such as conceptual design, logical database, capacity planning, external data interface specification, data loading plan, data maintenance plan and security policy.
  • Documents and communicates database design. Evaluates and installs database management systems. Codes complex programs and derives logical processes on technical platforms.
  • Builds windows, screens and reports. Assists in the design of user interface and business application prototypes.
  •  Participates in quality assurance and develops test application code in client server environment.
  • Provides expertise in devising, negotiating and defending the tables and fields provided in the database.
  • Adapts business requirements, developed by modeling/development staff and systems engineers, and develops the data, database specifications, and table and element attributes for an application.
  • At more experienced levels, helps to develop an understanding of client's original data and storage mechanisms.
  • Determines appropriateness of data for storage and optimum storage organization.
  • Determines how tables relate to each other and how fields interact within the tables for a relational model.
  • Applies advanced principles, theories, and concepts. Conducts projects requiring additional specialized knowledge. Contributes to the development of innovative principles and ideas.
  • Works on unusually complex problems and provides solutions that are highly creative. Uses independent judgement to accomplish objectives.

Minimum Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience. Less years required if has relevant Master’s or Doctorate qualifications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and governing relational database solutions, including data modeling, storage optimization, and database architecture standards.
  • Proven ability to translate complex business and system requirements into scalable database specifications, table structures, and data elements.
  • Strong expertise in solving highly complex data challenges using advanced engineering principles, independent judgment, and innovative approaches.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional technical teams and communicate database design decisions clearly to influence outcomes.

Business Experience:

  • Leads the design, implementation, and governance of enterprise database solutions, establishing standards and quality practices to ensure scalability, security, and reliability.
  • Translates complex business and system requirements into robust relational data models, database specifications, and optimized storage strategies.
  • Provides technical leadership on database architecture decisions, including data organization, table relationships, capacity planning, and integration with business applications and reporting.
  • Partners with application development and systems engineering teams to ensure effective alignment between database solutions, user interfaces, and client-server environments.
  • Applies advanced engineering principles and independent judgment to solve highly complex data challenges, delivering innovative and high‑impact solutions.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and advisor on database design, influencing decisions, defending data structures, and advancing best practices across teams.

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$145,700 - $242,900
