Job Description:
This position provides specialized education for patients, families, and members of the community. The RN Patient Family Educator position conducts training from approved curriculum resources. This position may conduct needs assessment and individualize educational activities as appropriate for participants. This position participates in curriculum updates and revisions based on current research and policy revisions.Benefits Eligible: Yes
Shift Details: Part time (20 budgeted hours). Typically Monday-Friday, hours will very depending on surgery schedule.
Unit/Location: McKay-Dee Hospital
Preferred Qualifications: RN experience in Cardiology or Cardiothoracic Surgery preferred.
Additional Information: This position will be educating patients and their families about upcoming surgeries. Assuring all preoperative testing is done and the patient is ready and safe for surgery. Reviewing orders for accuracy, reviewing diagnostic labs and communicating with the team any abnormal results. Coordinating care of the patient and working with the patient, family, interdisciplinary team assuring preoperative and postoperative needs and cares are met. Liaison between patients and their families and the surgical team. Triaging phone calls and assisting with some in office procedures.
Liaison between the office and Same Day surgery. Ongoing communication, education, process improvement.
Liaison between the office and Outpatient Services for problem solving, process improvement.
Track and follow up in real time tracked measures (Beta Blockers and Antibiotics).
Participate in Process improvement projects
Follow up with post discharge needs such as home health
Order supplies pertaining to surgery
Job Essentials
Implements education programs for designated group(s) and / or unit(s).
Teaches classes and adapts delivery of education to meet audience needs.
Provides effective coaching to patient, family or community as necessary.
Shares expertise to support staff curriculum development as necessary.
Participates in curriculum updates and revisions based on current research and policy revisions.
Remains current with applicable clinical information and increases knowledge utilizing research-based information. Takes accountability for personal development and knowledge base.
Maintains clinical competency in designated area for age groups served by performing (formally or informally) in the clinical setting.
Helps identify and promote quality improvement. Shares information with physicians and staff and may assist staff in developing a plan of care for applicable education audience to address problem areas.
Oversees applicable supplies (as needed per educational content).
Performs all accountabilities of Registered Nurse for patient care (as applicable), including all applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Follows-up with patients as needed.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, etc.
