Job Overview:

This role will work across a matrix product team design and be responsible for technical solution design, implementation & continuous improvement of products and systems by Medical Digital and Tech in alignment with our Agile Ways of Working, DevSecOps principles and Compliance / Digital Certainty. The role will work within a product team and entails working closely with a Product Manager aligned with agile and DevOps principles.

The Principal Tech Lead is a “T-Shaped” role demonstrating both depth and breadth across key engineer competencies e.g. Software Development, Automated Testing, DevOps, CI/CD, Data Science/Analytics and Lifecycle Management.  The role will need to have the ability to successfully collaborate with experts from other Tech Teams and subject matter domains. In addition, the role will need to demonstrate core engineer knowledge/experience of industry technologies, practices and frameworks e.g. REACT, Azure Cloud Ops, AI/ML, CI/CD, DevOps, Automating Testing, API Architectures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architecture Design: Define and design the architecture of web applications, ensuring scalability, security, performance, and high availability.
  • Technology Leadership: Evaluate and select appropriate technology stacks, tools, and frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Node.js, .NET, Java) to meet project needs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, developers, and UX/UI designers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Code Standards & Best Practices: Establish coding standards, architecture principles, and best practices for application development.
  • Performance Optimization: Ensure that web applications are optimized for performance, including load balancing, caching strategies, and efficient database queries.
  • Security: Design applications with a focus on security, including the implementation of OWASP best practices, data encryption, authentication, and access control measures.
  • DevOps Integration: Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines, ensuring seamless deployment and version control.
  • Scalability: Architect systems that can handle increasing user loads and traffic, ensuring elasticity and reliability.
  • Mentoring: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to development teams, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain architecture diagrams, documentation, and technical roadmaps to ensure the system's scalability and sustainability.
  • Leadership: Provides leadership, technical direction and GSK expertise to product teams composed of GSK FTEs, strategic partners and software vendors

Must Have Skills:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Proven experience as a Web Application Architect or in a similar role.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in front-end and back-end technologies (e.g., JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, .NET, Java, etc.).
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and microservices architecture.
  • Database Design: Expertise in database design (SQL, NoSQL) and experience with data modeling.
  • Security Practices: Familiarity with security best practices for web applications (OWASP, TLS, etc.).
  • DevOps Practices: Experience with DevOps practices and tools (Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Git, etc.).
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Communication & Leadership: Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Good to Have Skills:

  • Advanced Degree:  Master’s degree in computer science or relevant field.
  • Life Sciences Experience: Experience in Life sciences/Healthcare Industry
  • Azure Certification: Azure Cloud experience/certification.
  • Innovative Technologies: Experience in experimentation/prototyping with innovative technologies including AI/ML and GenAI.
