Job Title:

Registered Respiratory Therapist-ECMO Specialist

Job Summary:

To operate extracoporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system according to protocol. To monitor system and maintain accurate and timely reports of system activities. To monitor progress of patient's status and adjust ECMO system accordingly. To document and report all pertinent information to ECMO coordinator and ECMO physician.

Education & Experience

Associate's degree in Respiratory Care or related science, registered by the NBRC, plus eighteen (18) months of respiratory care required.  PALS preferred.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required:  RRT

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Advanced critical thinking skills with teaching ability, leadership ability, interpersonal skills, verbal communications skills, and collaborative skills.  Ability to handle flexible scheduling including on-call shifts.   Passing score on annual competency exam.  Must complete annual safety training.  Decision making skills. Validation of competency will be ensured initially and on an ongoing basis, and competency may include animal models.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for safe and orderly operation of extra-corporeal circuit according to ECMO protocol, including drawing blood samples; administering medication,  blood products, and fluids; checking circuit for air and clots to prevent these occurrences when possible and correcting when found; monitoring heat exchanger temperatures; maintaining heparin infusion; analyzing activated coagulation time (ACT), blood gas, chemistry panel, HGB/HCT, adjusting the gas and pump flow; monitoring pre- and post-membrane pressures; and/or monitoring bladder pressures.
  • Assures complete documentation of ECMO records.
  • Reports pertinent information on patient's status to on coming team.
  • Maintains ECMO equipment and inventory.
  • Participates and completes initial ECMO training.  Maintains competency in the function as an ECMO specialist; maintains ongoing theory and skill level with changes in practice.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, occasional standing, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
