The Director, Indirect Taxes leads Groupon’s global indirect tax team of 5-7 tax professionals and is responsible for sales and use tax, VAT, unclaimed property, property taxes, and other non-income tax related filings.  In addition to leading the global indirect tax function of Groupon, key responsibilities include interfacing with other teams to advise on optimal deal structures, reviewing contracts for indirect tax and unclaimed property considerations, analyzing the indirect tax impacts of commercial initiatives and ensuring compliance with indirect tax filings across the world.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely filings of all monthly sales tax, use tax, VAT and other indirect tax filings for numerous tax jurisdictions in multiple countries
  • Work with various Groupon teams such as Sales, Accounting, Engineering, Finance, Treasury and Legal to advise on the indirect tax impact of new business initiatives
  • Review contracts for appropriate indirect tax and unclaimed property considerations
  • Lead indirect tax audits, appeals, voluntary disclosure agreements, and other indirect tax controversies
  • Assess and maintain required indirect tax reserves (ASC 450/FAS 5) for multiple legal entities on a global basis
  • Lead implementation and maintenance of indirect tax related tax software and technology tools, including oversight of automation and artificial intelligence tools
  • Monitor changes to indirect tax laws and analyze and communicate the impact to Groupon
  • Regularly report on indirect tax matters to senior leadership and external auditors

Requirements:

 

  • Strong understanding of US sales/use tax and VAT concepts
  • Experience with U.S. unclaimed property laws & compliance
  • Bachelors’ degree in accounting
  • CPA preferred, Masters in Tax a plus
  • 10 or more years of public accounting or equivalent experience with a publicly traded company
  • Significant hands-on experience with indirect tax compliance and tax audit defense
  • Experience in the high-tech / e-commerce industries preferred
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
