Marketing Director, Japan

Thomson Reuters is looking for a data and results-driven senior B2B marketing leader to drive brand awareness and growth in Japan. You will be the country marketing leader and a strategic business partner to the Head of Japan and the Japan leadership team, helping shape the go-to-market strategy for one of our most important growth markets.

In your role you will define and own the integrated marketing plan for Japan, across our Legal, Tax and Trade businesses. You will build Thomson Reuters’ reputation and category position, growing pipeline, and deepening adoption across our customer base as AI changes how legal, tax and compliance professionals work.

You will report to the Vice President of Marketing, Asia & Emerging Markets, and orchestrate across global, regional and in-country teams. This is not a standalone function: you will plan and execute with AEM and global teams across demand, digital, content, events, partner marketing and PR. You will translate global strategy into programs built for Japan, and you make sure Japan shapes regional and global plans.

About the Role

In this opportunity as a Marketing Director, Japan, you will:

Business and market leadership

  • Serve as the senior marketing leader and trusted advisor to the Japan leadership team, with a seat in country strategy and market planning.
  • Own the Japan marketing strategy across reputation, demand, customer growth and the partner ecosystem.
  • Partner with Japan sales leadership to align marketing investment with growth priorities, whitespace and account segmentation.
  • Spot market opportunities through research, customer feedback, win/loss insight and analytics, and champion Japan’s localisation needs with global product and marketing teams.
  • Own the Japan marketing budget: planning, allocation and delivery across all programs, including agency and vendor relationships.

Brand, reputation and executive engagement

  • Grow Thomson Reuters’ awareness, reputation and category position in Japan, positioning us as the trusted choice for AI-enabled solutions against global, local and AI-native players.
  • Set up and run local PR and earned media through a retained agency, and build a Japanese-language thought leadership program.
  • Run C-suite engagement programs for priority accounts, build our presence with industry analysts, associations and influential bodies, and own major moments such as SYNERGY Tokyo.

Demand generation and ABM

  • Own Japan’s marketing-created and influenced pipeline targets and marketing-attributed sales.
  • Run the Japan ABM motion: 1:1 and 1:few programs for Japanese multinationals and large firms, planned with Sales and connected to the regional program.
  • Lead launch and adoption marketing for new AI products, and turn global campaigns into Japanese-first programs built for local buyers, channels and culture, not just translated.
  • Build market education programs that create buyer urgency in emerging categories such as e-invoicing and tax compliance.

Customer and partner marketing

  • Work with Sales, Customer Success and Product Marketing to grow the existing customer base: adoption of new AI capabilities, cross-sell, retention and expansion.
  • Build a steady drumbeat of customer stories and references that drive word-of-mouth among Japanese enterprises.
  • Develop co-marketing and joint events with our consulting and alliance partners to extend reach and grow partner-sourced pipeline.

AI-first marketing

  • Champion AI-enabled ways of working and move the Japan marketing team toward AI-native practices.
  • Apply AI to how buyers now research and buy, including search and content discovery in Japanese.
  • Use data, automation and AI to improve marketing effectiveness, from lead scoring to measurement.

Team leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop the Japan marketing team.
  • Build a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous learning.

Success Measures

  • Measurable contribution to Japan’s pipeline and revenue targets, including growth in inbound demand.
  • Growth in Thomson Reuters’ awareness, reputation and category leadership in Japan.
  • Higher adoption, expansion and retention across our existing customers.
  • Growth in partner-sourced and partner-influenced pipeline.
  • A high-performing Japan marketing team, operating as part of one regional and global function and trusted by the Japan leadership team.

About You

You are a fit for the Marketing Director, Japan position if you have the following requirements:

  • 12+ years of marketing leadership in enterprise technology, SaaS or professional information services, including 5+ years building and leading teams.
  • Experience leading country or regional marketing in Japan.
  • A track record as a strategic business partner to senior sales and country executives.
  • Strong experience across brand, demand generation, ABM, executive engagement, communications and events, from strategy through execution.
  • Experience running PR and communications, including hiring and managing agencies.
  • Commercial fluency: enterprise buying cycles, pipeline, funnel and revenue metrics, attribution and budget management.
  • Experience in matrixed global organisations: localising global programs and influencing without authority.
  • A strong understanding of AI’s impact on marketing and buying, and the ability to lead AI-enabled change in the function.
  • Excellent communication, executive presence and stakeholder management, including public speaking.
  • Native or fluent Japanese and business-level English.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in legal, tax, risk and compliance, or professional services technology, is highly regarded.
