What We Offer
This internship is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. The City and County of Denver offers a competitive pay rate commensurate with education, with the pay range for this position between $21.42 - $24.14/hour. This position is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.
Location, Schedule, and Duration
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. In this position you can expect to work on site at least 3 days per week at or near Denver International Airport.
This is a 6-month internship from Monday, June 1, 2026 - Friday, November 20, 2026, hours typically vary between 20-39 hours a week during the summer and 15-30 hours a week during school semesters. The DENtern’s work schedule will be flexible to accommodate their current academic commitments. Hours not exceeding 39 hours a week.

Since opening on Feb. 28, 1995, Denver International Airport (DEN) has become one of the world’s busiest airports. Through the DEN Intern (nicknamed “DENtern”) Program, students gain real world experience in aviation and workforce development while building professional skills. DENterns participate in a cohort-based model that emphasizes networking, collaboration, and professional growth, attending all scheduled professional development sessions, tours, and engaging in impactful projects across the airport.
DEN’s Technical Programs and Systems (TPS) Group is actively seeking an Engineering DENtern to contribute to the Design, Engineering & Construction (DEC) division. As part of DEN's Strategic Plan, Vision 100, which envisions reaching 100 million annual passengers, TPS plays a pivotal role in transforming the aviation industry.
The TPS group serves as subject matter experts in a variety of engineering and professional disciplines for the airport, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, life safety, commissioning, and fueling engineering. As registered professional engineers, the team helps support Project Managers in DEC on construction projects across the airport, as well as assisting our stakeholder partners in other divisions. Our engineering team helps set and provide guidance to the standards for the airport, ensuring our strategic goals are met in a safe and standardized way.
As an Engineering DENtern, you will work on projects such as, but not limited to:
Project #1: Support the Systems Group’s weekly tasks.
Sharing design review tasks with the engineering team.
Leading systems group weekly meetings.
Attending and documenting site visits for various projects and construction verification.
Project #2: Research code and industry design trends for inclusion in the DEN Design Standard Manual (DSM) update process, which is the standard to which all projects at DEN are held during the design process to ensure consistency across the airport.
Provide recommendations for inclusion in the fall change cycle.
Provide a technical presentation to the TPS group on one of the major issues or trends facing our airport.
Project #3: Support the engineering process and diagram updates through field investigations and design drawings.
Document updates to electrical one-line diagrams, mechanical piping models, and other system diagrams utilizing DEN standard Revit templates and families.
Develop standard engineering details and schedules for incorporation into our Revit templates to support future projects by internal and external design teams.
Project #4: Cross-discipline learning and assistance from other engineering teams.
Support Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Life Safety Engineers with Revit standard creation and updates.
Project #5: Green Belt Certification Project.
Development of a continuous improvement project to improve on a simple process within the department to increase efficiency within the team, in accordance with DEN’s ‘Just Do It’ initiative.
Project #5: Aviation Megatrend Research.
Collaborate with a team of fellow DENterns to conduct discovery research on a key aviation megatrend. This includes gathering data, interviewing industry experts, and analyzing findings. At the end of the summer, your team will present insights to DEN’s executive leadership to help shape strategic innovation and prepare the airport for the future.
What You’ll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

Problem-Solving: Analyzing issues and developing solutions. Critical thinking and providing novel solutions to day to day and large scales problems and tasks.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with relevant software or tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Autodesk Revit and AutoCad). Interest in design and construction engineering disciplines (architectural, MEP, life safety) and how they interact within the aviation environment. Desire to build on existing skills while gaining relevant experience in the engineering world with hands-on work in a variety of in-office and field environments.
Attention to Detail: Thoroughness in completing tasks accurately.
Time Management: Efficiently managing time and meeting deadlines.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education requirements: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in Science, technology, engineering, mathematics or closely related field, or a recent graduate (com-pleted specified program within 1 year of completion).

Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
License/Certifications: By position, may require a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Additional Information
FBI Background Check: FBI criminal background check is required for all positions at Denver International Airport (DEN).
