Mechanical lead - Job Description
Position Overview:
Mechanical Subject Matter Expert to serve as the technical authority for all mechanical systems across JLL managed portfolio. This role requires a strategic thinker who can balance technical expertise to ensure mechanical compliance, optimize performance, and drive sustainability initiatives including advanced HVAC technologies and innovative cooling solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Expertise
Serve as the primary mechanical SME for all technical matters across the entire portfolio, providing authoritative guidance on mechanical systems, standards, and best practices
Provide technical oversight for mechanical maintenance programs, equipment specifications, and system upgrades
Undertake design reviews of mechanical equipment and systems including HVAC systems (chillers, cooling towers, AHUs), radiant cooling systems, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, heat pumps, pumps and piping systems, building automation controls, water treatment systems, and mechanical components of fire and life safety systems
Compliance & Risk Management
Advise leadership team on all mechanical compliance requirements including ASHRAE standards, local mechanical codes, global standards, and industry-specific regulations
Conduct risk assessments for mechanical systems to identify Single Points of Failure (SPOFs) and recommend mitigation strategies
Ensure compliance with indoor air quality standards, thermal comfort requirements, and energy efficiency mandates
Sustainability & Energy Management
Partner with the Sustainability Lead to steer green mechanical initiatives including geothermal systems, heat recovery solutions, and high-efficiency HVAC technologies
Identify and quantify opportunities for mechanical energy savings through system optimization, equipment upgrades, and operational improvements including implementation of radiant cooling solutions, demand-controlled ventilation, and advanced building automation strategies
Develop business cases for mechanical efficiency projects and track performance against targets in conjunction with sustainability lead
Support LEED, ENERGY STAR, and other sustainability certification processes from a mechanical perspective
Drive implementation of innovative cooling technologies including radiant cooling panels, chilled beams, and thermal energy storage systems
Team Development & Training Leadership
Design and deliver comprehensive mechanical training programs for facility technicians and maintenance staff across all sites, covering safety protocols, troubleshooting procedures, and equipment maintenance best practices for advanced HVAC systems
Provide specialized training on emerging technologies including radiant cooling systems, smart HVAC controls, and energy recovery ventilation
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Research emerging mechanical technologies including advanced heat pump systems, magnetic bearing chillers, variable speed drives, and IoT-enabled mechanical equipment to evaluate their applicability to the portfolio
Lead pilot programs for new mechanical systems, smart building technologies, and IoT integration including predictive maintenance solutions and real-time performance monitoring
Establish key performance indicators and benchmarking metrics for mechanical system performance including energy efficiency ratios, thermal comfort metrics, and equipment reliability indices
Lead development and implementation of mechanical innovation pilot projects across the portfolio, including radiant cooling system deployments, advanced building automation integration, and high-efficiency HVAC retrofits to drive operational efficiency and cost reduction
Operational Excellence Initiatives
Identify and implement mechanical operational excellence opportunities including predictive maintenance programs using vibration analysis, thermal imaging, and IoT sensors for chillers, pumps, and air handling equipment to reduce downtime and maintenance costs
Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as mechanical system standardization programs, automated fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) systems, and data-driven optimization to enhance service delivery efficiency and reduce operational complexity across all sites
Required Competencies:
Technical Expertise
Deep knowledge of HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handling units, and distribution systems
Extensive experience with radiant cooling technologies, underfloor air distribution, and advanced thermal comfort systems
Proficiency in building automation systems, energy management systems, and mechanical system controls
Knowledge of water treatment, indoor air quality management, and mechanical system commissioning
Innovation & Technology
Experience with emerging HVAC technologies including magnetic bearing equipment, variable refrigerant flow systems, and thermal energy storage
Understanding of renewable energy integration including geothermal systems and solar thermal applications
Sustainability & Efficiency
Proven track record in implementing energy-efficient mechanical solutions and achieving measurable energy savings
Experience with green building certifications and sustainability reporting from a mechanical systems perspective
Knowledge of carbon reduction strategies and decarbonization technologies for mechanical systems
Education and Experience Requirements:
Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering,
Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), ASHRAE certifications are preferred
Experience
Minimum 12-15 years of progressive experience in mechanical systems design, operation, and maintenance within commercial real estate, data centers, or large-scale facility management
Proven track record of leading mechanical system innovation projects, energy efficiency initiatives, and sustainability programs with measurable results
Experience managing technical teams and developing training programs for mechanical systems personnel
