A Day in the Life

Join Medtronic in Grenoble as a Sustaining Engineering Supervisor and contribute directly to our mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. In this key engineering leadership role, you will oversee a team of engineers dedicated to sustaining and optimizing production line performance, with a strong focus on equipment reliability, process robustness, and operational excellence. You will drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, ensure safety, meet delivery targets, and optimize cost efficiency. Working at one of Medtronic’s most advanced and automated high volume manufacturing facilities, you’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in a high-impact environment where engineering, innovation, and purpose come together to support the production of life-changing medical technologies.


This position is based in Grenoble, France, and reports directly to the Site Engineering Manager. The role involves less than 10% travel. Experience in robotics, automation, and industrial vision is highly desirable.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Build, Develop and Manage a high-performing Sustaining Engineering Team: Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of sustaining engineers and technicians, fostering technical expertise, accountability, project management capabilities and continuous improvement mindset within the team
  • Drive Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions: Lead investigations into equipment or process deviations, non-conformances (NCMR ownership), or recurring issues, applying structured problem-solving tools (e.g., 5 Why, Fishbone, DMAIC) to implement effective corrective and preventive actions
  • Monitor and Report Operational Metrics: Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), yield, downtime, and process capability; use data to proactively identify trends and opportunities for improvement
  • Support Compliance and Validation Activities: Ensure all processes and equipment comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485), and lead or support the team in maintaining process validations with updated documentation
  • Lead Continuous Improvement Initiatives: Identify and execute projects to improve manufacturing performance in areas such as scrap reduction, cycle time optimization, downtime minimization, and cost savings using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Quality, Maintenance, Production, R&D, Suppliers and OU (Business Unit) Engineering teams to support process improvements, transfer knowledge, and align on product and process strategies
  • Perform Equipment Criticality Assessments and Manage Obsolescence: Lead equipment criticality evaluations to prioritize resources and risk mitigation efforts; develop and develop obsolescence management plans to ensure long-term equipment reliability and business continuity
     

Required Knowledge and Experience :

  • Bachelor or Master degree, full English fluency and 8-10 years of Automation equipment design or maintenance or manufacturing engineering experience 
  • Leadership and People Management: ideally 5 years of people management experience: Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop engineering teams, promote accountability, and operate in a highly matrixed business environment
  • Experience with process validation in machining and in a highly automated environment (automation, robotics, computer vision systems)
  • Project Management & Prioritization: Ability to manage multiple sustaining and improvement projects simultaneously, with strong planning, execution, and stakeholder alignment
  • Analytical mindset, Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing: Proficiency in Lean principles and Six Sigma methodologies; experience leading initiatives to improve quality, reduce cost, and enhance efficiency
  • Previous medical device experience is a valuable asset
