Senior Technician - Data Center Site Operations

Position Summary

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Technician with a passion for troubleshooting and resolving a range of datacenter infrastructure issues including, but not limited to, hardware, fiber, networking, and related problems. The successful candidate will possess strong supervisory experience and outstanding customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Senior Technician - Data Center Site Operations is responsible for executing operational objectives, policies, and procedures. As the Data Center Operations representative, you will manage projects, installations, testing, budgets, risks, and changes, ensuring the smooth functioning of our data center infrastructure. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high-quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong aptitude for troubleshooting, improve effectiveness through process innovation, and take ownership of technical issues to drive resolution.

Position Responsibilities

As a Senior Technician, you will:

  • Participate in regular meetings with stakeholders to establish and maintain strong relationships
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex incident management issues, producing incident reports for further analysis
  • Coordinate vendor procurement and contractual activities
  • Ensure data center equipment maintenance meets industry standards
  • Oversee operating budget and complex facilities projects, including project budget, schedule, and scope
  • Implement strategies to proactively prevent potential problems and manage emergency and disaster mitigation
  • Oversee commissioning processes and lead testing of existing and new equipment
  • Successfully deliver projects on time, on budget, and within scope
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with external project teams and resources
  • Identify stakeholders, review design packages, and select vendors
  • Manage project deployment risks and forecast budget requirements
  • Act as the Data Center Operations POC for site infrastructure initiatives
  • Handle and resolve escalations while partnering with relevant stakeholders to deliver projects
  • Write comprehensive RFPs for various projects
  • Assist in budget management
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for essential operating protocols
  • Prepare business plans and conduct data analysis of relevant reports
  • Install various hardware as required
  • Complete/Oversee service orders in an accurate and timely manner
  • Oversee routine operational maintenance support and hardware maintenance
  • Respond to customer requests quickly and resolve technical problems effectively
  • Oversee coordinated and scheduled maintenance activities with multiple parties in multiple locations, following standard procedures
  • Coordinate with other technical teams to complete various tasks, requests, and/or projects
  • Frequently lift or move equipment and material weighing up to 50 pounds for various needs
  • Oversee planning, coordinating, and managing the technical aspects in projects related to the datacenter
  • Identify and manage dependencies between these projects and with other ongoing activities
  • Lead and assist with all design aspects of the data center support systems and overall data center layout
  • Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners
  • Find innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce costs without negative impacts on quality or reliability
  • Engage in physical data center activities such as planning and tracking capacity, rack deployment, rack cabling, hardware and software troubleshooting, and rack decommissioning
  • Maintain service level agreements through implementation of proactive issue detection and reporting

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in a 24/7/365 critical facility environment, including troubleshooting, management, and mentoring of skilled professionals
  • Knowledge of EHS compliance requirements and experience with audits
  • Understanding of power distribution and control systems, redundancy, resiliency, and protection
  • Ability to manage change and influence cross-functionally
  • Previous experience in people management is essential
  • PM certification(s) are a plus
  • FOA certification a plus
  • Strong communication skills, including effectively communicating progress of programs/projects
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and resolve challenging stakeholder situations
  • Financial acumen with the ability to connect program objectives to financial results and manage project budgets effectively
  • Must use and maintain personal protective equipment as required
  • Ability to write concise and accurate reports
  • Ability to appropriately escalate data center incidents and respond to alarms
  • Communicate effectively with customers and internal staff
  • Learn quickly and address issues as they arise in a Mission Critical 24×7 environment
  • Schedule flexibility with ability to work non-standard business hours
  • Strong work ethic and accountability
  • Ability to work independently and follow all escalation procedures regarding critical or emergency situations
  • Ability to operate in and promote a rigorous process-driven team environment
  • Ability to logically analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to effectively multi-task while assisting customers and working on multiple projects
  • Familiar with computer systems and software programs such as MS Word, Excel, and MS Outlook
  • Ability to climb and balance
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, stretch, and crawl
  • Must be comfortable working in a high stress, fast paced environment with shifting priorities
  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Train and mentors Technicians through on-the-job training (OJT) and provide direct guidance on specific tasks (e.g., deployments, break/fix); may complete additional training to obtain or maintain relevant role certifications
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosing computer, server, and network hardware
  • Proficiency with designing and leading infrastructure modification projects
  • Proficiency with troubleshooting/installing/testing sophisticated circuits
  • Proficiency installing circuits requiring sophisticated fiber terminations
  • Proficiency with installation, testing, and modification of cross-connects per documented procedures with accurate cable management
  • Proficiency installing low voltage cable in active data center environment
  • Experience with opening and closing tasks within ticketing system is highly preferred
  • Experience with Hard Drive Sanitation Software (Blancco) is desired
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred
  • Experience with Network tools (Infoblox, Lantronix) is desired
  • Experience with Azure DevOps is desired
  • Experience with DCIM management software is preferred
  • Experience with CAD/Visio is desired
  • Experience with technical documentation creation
  • Experience with Data Center equipment is preferred
  • Experience with Client hardware troubleshooting including diagnosis and/or replacement, cybersecurity requirements, client architecture is preferred
  • Knowledge of DevOps methodologies and concepts is desired
  • Proven ability to concentrate and demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quickly
  • Excellent research, decision-making and organizational skills are required
  • Excellent communication skills including spoken and written skills
  • Proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent customer facing skills
  • Familiarity with the following standards:
    • Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI)
    • Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA)
    • Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA)
    • National Electronic Code (NEC) 

Experience

  • 5+ years operations-related hands-on experience or equivalent work experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience

Annual Salary

$33.75 - $64.52

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
