Material Bank is seeking a Principal Data Engineer/Architect with extensive data architecture and data platform design experience to enable Material Bank’s internal catalog and power massive scale SaaS/eCommerce applications. As a Principal Data Architect at Material Bank, you will design and architect robust, scalable database systems to support our comprehensive material catalog. Your focus will be on developing optimal schemas and attributes, ensuring data integrity and efficient retrieval across databases and PIM systems. You will also be responsible for creating and maintaining data ingestion pipelines from various sources, including third-party data providers, brand partners, and web scraping, utilizing tools such as DBT, Airbyte and Airflow. You will create detailed data models, integrate various data sources, and implement performance optimizations.

Additionally, you will establish data governance policies and plan for scalability. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will translate business requirements into technical specifications and continuously improve our database architecture, leveraging the latest industry trends and technologies. This role requires deep expertise in database technologies, strong analytical skills, and effective communication.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, experienced with architecting eCommerce data catalogs and a variety of technologies in the AWS ecosystem, thrives in a dynamic work environment, and demonstrates a flexible and adaptable work style. Operating at depth is key to success in this role—requiring constant learning and growth, a mastery of the catalog’s schemas and attributes, and a rich understanding of the needs of catalog users. This is a remote position based in the United States with a strong preference for US East time zone.

What you’ll do: 

Reporting to the Director of the Catalog teams:

  • Design and architect robust, scalable database systems to support Material Bank's comprehensive material catalog.
  • Develop optimal schemas and attributes, ensuring data integrity and efficient retrieval across databases and PIM systems.
  • Create detailed data models, integrate various data sources, and implement performance optimizations.
  • Develop and maintain ingestion pipelines for catalog data from various sources, including third-party data providers, brand partners, and web scraping, using tools such as Airbyte and Airflow.
  • Establish and enforce data governance policies and plan for scalability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Continuously improve database architecture, leveraging the latest industry trends and technologies.
  • Operate at depth, requiring constant learning and growth.
  • Master the catalog’s schemas and attributes and develop a rich understanding of the needs of catalog users.

What you’ll bring: 

  • 10+ years of experience in data architecture and data platform design, with a focus on eCommerce and SaaS applications.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Deep expertise in database technologies, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with data modeling and schema design.
  • Extensive experience with AWS ecosystem and its various data services.
  • Proven ability to develop and optimize schemas and attributes for large-scale databases, specifically for product catalogs in eCommerce environments.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to implement performance optimizations.
  • In-depth knowledge of product catalog design, including taxonomy, attribute management, and data integration.
  • Experience developing and maintaining ingestion pipelines for catalog data from sources such as third-party data providers, brand partners, and web scraping, using tools like DBT, Airbyte, and Airflow.
  • Experience in establishing and enforcing data governance policies.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, with experience working with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Ability to continuously learn and stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer) are a plus.
