Welcome to Enzyme, Protein and Strain Engineering R&D
At Novonesis R&D California, we discover and develop the next microbial solutions for a better world. The Davis team has more than 50 unique and creative individuals, working together to unlock the incredible potential of bacteria, yeast and fungi. We work together with global R&D colleagues across all of Novonesis, including application areas, such as human health, bioenergy, food and beverages, and sustainable agriculture.  We enjoy a collaborative working environment with a shared vision for pursuing goals that matter, working smart and enjoying the scientific journey.

Join our team as Manager, Fermentation
Are you ready for a challenging role that lets you use both your scientific expertise and managerial skills? If so, you could be our new Fermentation Department Manager. The Fermentation team consists of a talented group of scientists, researchers and technicians. As Manager, you will support and enable efforts of the fermentation team to evaluate physiology and performance of fungal, bacterial and yeast strains.

To help build the next generation of biological solutions, you’ll work across departments within the Davis site as well as coordinate with colleagues and stakeholders at sites across the globe.  Alongside an in-depth understanding of the scientific principles of microbial fermentation, you’ll need to demonstrate strong skills in supervising technical teams, managing stakeholders and communicating with diverse audiences. In your daily work, you’ll use these skills to progress research and to deliver value-added products for a variety of industries, including household care, biofuels, animal health and human nutrition, as well as driving new technology development

As Manager you will have responsibility to ensure work is completed, meets high standards and is done in compliance with established guidelines and procedures, including organizational, occupational health, safety and environmental policies.

In this role you’ll make an impact by:

  • Working with other Davis R&D managers to achieve sitewide ambitions and corporate goals.

  • Applying an understanding of microbial physiology and fermentation systems to unlock the potential of a diverse collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and fungi.

  • Coaching and developing team members whose work involves demonstrating and optimizing microbial strain performance using benchtop fermentation equipment.

  • Analyzing fermentation data, to develop deeper insights that can be used in strain engineering and fermentation optimization.

  • Connecting with co-located R&D team members and global colleagues in fermentation scale-up and piloting.

  • Working in teams to unlock applications and biological insights you'd never achieve on your own.

You preferably have:

  • An innovative mind-set and can-do attitude coupled with an enthusiasm for developing people and the power of applied microbiology.

  • An educational background in Microbiology, Food Science, Biochemical Engineering or a related technical field.

  • Hands on experience running lab scale fermentations within a strain or process improvement program focused on enzyme expression, protein expression, metabolic engineering or other applied objectives.

  • Experience with set-up, operation and maintenance of benchtop fermentation hardware and data collection systems.

  • Demonstrated competence in cultivating a variety of different microbes, preferably spanning prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

  • Excellent computer skills, including some experience with statistical software such as JMP and/or experience with Python or Benchling.

  • A strong desire to work as a member of a cross-disciplinary and empowered problem-solving R&D team

  • A mindset that embraces challenging science, recognizes change as opportunity and finds satisfaction in team success
