The Director, Tax Research will play an instrumental role in the development of the Tax Research section of the National Tax Practice. The Director will create, implement and maintain the Taxionary tax research database, and work with internal and external customers regarding customer service issues. The Director will plan, coordinate, and perform multistate sales and use tax research, including the management of Tax Research staff, on client service projects under the direction of Engagement Principals. The Director will make taxability determinations and formulate opinions regarding tax ramifications to complex transactions. The Director is also responsible for ensuring that Tax Research goals align with Firm goals.

Job Summary: 

The Director, Tax Research will play an instrumental role in the development of the Tax Research section of the National Tax Practice.    The Director will plan, coordinate, and perform multistate sales and use tax research, including the management of Tax Research staff, on client service projects under the direction of Engagement Principals.  The Director will make taxability determinations and formulate opinions regarding tax ramifications to complex transactions.  The Director is also responsible for ensuring that Tax Research goals align with Firm goals. While the primary job focus is sales and use tax, the job may involve business activity, business license, and excise taxes.

  • Reviews and approves tax research performed by others.
  • Manages tax research staff.

Client

  • Manages tax research matrix work for client service practice.
  • Maintains effective and efficient communication with state and local tax agencies, SMEs, and other stakeholders through written and verbal channels.
  • May negotiate and draft Voluntary Disclosure Agreements, draft binding Letter Ruling requests and informal guidance requests, handle registrations and assist with registration/deficiency resolution on behalf of clients.  May draft or edit Sales and Use Tax Navigator content for client Bloomberg Tax.

Value

  • Plans and develops comprehensive tax documentation and methods using advanced technology.
  • Researches multistate taxability through various sources, including legal online databases and the Internet.
  • Analyzes and documents current, multistate tax laws and law changes.
  • Makes taxability determinations and formulates opinions regarding tax ramifications to complex transactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Master of Tax or Juris Doctor degree in related field required with at least seven to eight years prior experience in a progressively complex tax accounting and research environment. 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft® Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Advanced knowledge of Internet and research software is required.  The individual will also need a strong working knowledge of tax research tools such as CCH and Lexis/Nexis.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.  Admission to a State Bar or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The individual is required to perform moderate supervisory responsibilities, which may include training employees, assigning work, verifying work accuracy and completeness, and preparing goals and evaluations.

Work Environment:

  • Standard indoor working environment.
  • Occasional long periods of sitting while working at computer.
  • Position requires regular interaction with employees both in person and via e-mail and telephone.
  • Independent travel requirement: potential for 10%.
