Job Details

Job Responsibilities:

• Performs genetic counseling in accordance with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Genetic Counselors’ Scope of Practice guidelines.
• Identifies and coordinates appropriate genetic testing. 
• Reports results to the patient and the referring provider.
• Completes EPIC documentation and billing within established guidelines.
• Is proficient on the electronic medical record system (EPIC).  
• Continues to build patient volume.
• Develops and manages an effective system for case management.
• Serves as GC of the Day as scheduled. 
• Begins to liaise with laboratory representatives to build knowledge of genetic tests available in the market.
• Compliant with IRB processes and GMI research standards.
• Consents patients to research protocols.
• May assist with data collection, data entry, and/or data curation.
• May serve as a liaison between the laboratory and healthcare providers and patients for translational research.
• May contribute to writing of IRB protocol, informed consent, and other related research documents.
• May contribute to scientific manuscripts and abstracts
• Networks with healthcare providers in other Institutes, Family Health Centers, or community hospitals.
• Identifies educational opportunities for healthcare providers and/or patients to generate referrals.
• Attends relevant multidisciplinary care management meetings.
• Presents to other healthcare providers.
• Submits an abstract or proposal for an accepted educational session for a professional medical society meeting
• Provides community outreach at health fairs
• Reviews and revises, if needed, CPGH educational materials
• May represent Cleveland Clinic and CPGH at at least one professional education conference per year
• May contribute to publications, case reports, review articles, or commentaries in peer reviewed journals
• Supervises genetic counseling students and/or other trainees
• Other duties as assigned.

Education:

• Master’s Degree from an accredited genetic counseling training program

Certifications:

• ACMG (American College of Medical Genetics)/ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) Board certified.
• Ohio Medical Board licensed.

Competencies (Complexity of Work):

• Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

• Minimum of three years post-graduate clinical experience as a genetic counselor with demonstrated experience in a genetics clinic setting. 
• Experience with genetic counseling billing codes and EPIC EMR system is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Typical physical demands include a high degree of dexterity sufficient to operate a personal computer in the course of work, normal or corrected vision, extensive sitting and frequent walking, occasional lifting or carrying of 5 to 15 pounds.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
