Position Summary:
This leader will provide vision and leadership for the Design function within new product development Capital programs in the Acute Care Business Unit. This leader will be responsible to develop future concepts, products, experiences and to drive efforts that will significantly impact the success of the Acute Care business along with managing the team.
What you will do:
- This position will work within the Capital (Patient Support and Environment) organization utilizing design thinking methodologies for product conceptualization and development, understanding and articulating user insights, and guiding project teams and staff. The management of external design resources, budgets and schedules, and internal and external communication of design strategies and concepts are critical aspects of this position
- Drives activities that leverage Human Centered Design principles
- Designs experiences for products and services, including customer interations
- Plans, organizes, staffs, and directs the design research and industrial design activities. Will be required to develop and work within appropriate guidelines, policies, and regulations.
- Responsible for identifying and implementing research tools and techniques to develop deep customer insights that can be turned into new product development criteria. This will require excellent analytical, collaboration, and communications skills, as well as a high level of passion and motivation.
- Is knowledgeable of products/processes within the division. Assists other business units and segments with the application of his/her products. Looks for opportunities/synergies for cross-BU/cross-division ventures.
- Assists the Business Unit R&D and Marketing leads with the development of product pipeline. Ensures divisional and inter-divisional consistency through the development of a visual brand language and a common look and feel across product categories.
- Works as a key member of Acute Care R&D leadership team to drive business performance.
- Responsible for primary hiring, on-time performance appraisals, coaching/counseling, employee development and necessary communications regarding performance issues. Acts as a consultant and mentor to other designers.
- Planning and coordinating with other functional areas support sustainment design activities and ensure timely production.
- Accountable for all record-keeping as appropriate and in accordance with Stryker specifications.
- Responsible for the presentation of regular reviews and evaluations of Unit performance to Business Unit, Division, and Corporate leadership.
- Manage financial and human resources within budgeted guidelines.
- Drive employee engagement through frequent one-on-one communication focused on what each employee needs for growth and development.
- Understands organizational need to develop the next generation of leaders and remove under-performers.
- Manage and assign technical talent across multiple departments to meet business needs and develop employees.
- Expected to handle complex or difficult situations as appropriate.
- Ensures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements within prescribed area.
- Develops annual budget, status reports and other related communications.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or Architecture, or equivalent
- 12+ years applicable experience, with 6+ years direct people management experience preferred.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and managerial skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications (Strongly desired):
- Experience with product design in a health related field (Healthcare, Patient care provider, Healthcare furniture, Medical equipment or devices).
- Previous project management experience; clear understanding of project set-up, recruiting, familiarity working with an expanded team.
Travel Percentage: 20%
