The Public Relations Specialist is responsible for developing written content and supporting media relations initiatives for all assigned service lines and departments at The Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU. This role assists in growing, shaping, and maintaining a strong brand and reputation for each supported area at The Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Additionally, the position may also collaborate on content and communications relevant to supported areas, such as Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Essential Job functions 

  • Plans and develops content, including but not limited to feature stories, web content and collateral.
  • Supports media relations initiatives, including drafting releases and advisories, pitching, arranging interviews and conducting media escorts.
  • Seeks opportunities to amplify messaging through owned, earned and shared communications channels.
  • Uses excellent written and interpersonal communications skills to interact with patients, families, physicians, senior leadership and peers.
  • Reviews and edits materials created by other departments to ensure clarity and brand alignment.
  • Works in partnership with the marketing and communications team on the execution of videos, events and other multi-faceted projects.
  • Tracks and compiles reports of media activities and metrics to assess effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with outside vendors and supporters (i.e. Children’s Hospital Foundation) for congruency in communications.
  • Ensure responsibility and visible commitment of diversity equity and inclusion programs/initiatives through collaboration and implementation of initiatives across the health system.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education:    

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field from an accredited program

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:    
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Strong working knowledge of a variety of public relations programs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Proven ability to develop, implement, and execute successful public relations campaigns
