Site reliability engineering (SRE) is a set of principles and practices that incorporates aspects of software engineering and applies them to IT infrastructure and operations.  The main objectives are to create highly reliable and scalable software systems and automate operational processes.    SREs focus on availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning of their services.  

As an Application Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) you will be part of team of people who are responsible for the availability of a number of Discover’s most critical applications:  our Card and Bank websites and mobile application.  You’ll tap into your passion for ensuring these websites and mobile application are highly available for our customers.  

As an Expert Application Reliability Engineer, you’ll tap into your passion for finding and fixing inefficiencies to solve our reliability and performance issues. In our Agile environment, you’ll focus on availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change and problem management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning of our services. Your projects will deliver enhanced infrastructure, development, and deployment automation at Discover. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management. 

Responsibilities 

  • Partner with Application Development teams to build resiliency into our critical websites and mobile application – and define best-practices for SLI/SLO/Error Budgets
  • Proactively identify collaboration opportunities across the firm to promote reuseable solutions at scale
  • Partner with our Application Development teams and other SREs to build out end to end observability
  • Contribute to organizational strategy for monitoring, alerting and dashboards
  • Provide consulting expertise across SRE best practices for architects and application teams
  • Create and Maintain technology vision and roadmap for Digital SRE
  • Drive strategic technology decisions collaborating with internal and industry experts
  • Evolve our capacity management and performance management tools/processes to align with our company’s cloud strategy
  • Define the DR plan needed for our critical apps
  • Research industry best practices and add technical capabilities at Discover (i.e. chaos engineering)
  • Participate in an on call escalation rotation
  • Research new technology opportunities and how they can be used to add technical capabilities at Discover 
  • Drives strategic technology decisions based on collaboration with a board field of experts outside of Discover 
  • Contributes to the external image of Discover Technology as a desired workplace to learn technology best practices 
  • Recognized outside of Discover as a thought leader and participates in internal and external communities 
  • Shapes learning paths for Discover engineers by bringing what they learn back to Discover so everyone can benefit from their experiences 

Minimum Qualifications 

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you: 

  • Bachelors – Computer Science or related 
  • 8+ Years – Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related 
  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of expert on the Dreyfus engineering scale 

Preferred Qualifications 

Bonus Points If You Have: 

  • Good understanding of hybrid infrastructure, ideally with AWS
  • Expertise in one or more general purpose programming languages: Python, Go, shell scripting (Unix/Linux), Java 
  • Experience in CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience in container technology (Openshift, Kubernetes)
  • Expertise in automation tools experience such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible. 
  • Expertise in observability tools including APM (DataDog), synthetic monitoring and (Catchpoing), and log aggregation (Elk)
  • Experience in dashboarding tools such as Grafana and Kibana

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $125,500.00 to $211,500.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
