Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Associate Legal Counsel specializing in Labour and Employee Relations to join our legal team at Ledcor. In this role, you will provide expert advice and strategic guidance on complex Labour Relations and Human Resources legal matters across the organization, managing all employment related legal claims from beginning to end, and ensuring legal strategies align with Ledcor’s broader business objectives. You are someone who excels in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates exceptional problem-solving skills and possesses the ability to influence at all levels of an organization. You will play a key role in supporting/advising stakeholders on labour strategies, collective agreement interpretation, grievances, arbitrations, mediations, workplace policies, and all other employment legal matters.

This position can be based in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary or Toronto.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides expert legal advice on labour relations strategies when bidding on and setting up new projects and/or during the life cycle of a collective agreement
  • Advises stakeholders through research and analysis of current labour relations issues, including labour codes and other relevant legislation, case law and previous opinions obtained in current and new markets for Ledcor, providing insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making
  • Leads and represents (with assistance from external counsel where warranted) Ledcor’s interests at hearings, mediations and civil proceedings for all employment law issues, including unjust dismissals, discrimination claims, grievances, mediations, arbitrations and Labour Board matters as required
  • Partners with senior HR leadership to provide expert legal advice and guidance to managers, HR colleagues and other Ledcor stakeholders on a variety of employment legal issues, ensuring effective, legally compliant resolutions are established efficiently within company guidelines
  • Advises stakeholders on legislative changes and potential business implications
  • Partners with Employee Relations to develop and implement compliant employment policies that align with current best practices
  • Provide training and education to colleagues on labour law implications and compliance
  • Consults with internal and external legal counsel as required regarding employee issues, legislation and other applicable employment legal issues.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 8 years of legal experience specializing in labour relations and employment law, with some in-house legal experience preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree (Canada) / Juris Doctor in Law
  • Member in good standing of a provincial law society
  • Highly proficient in all areas of Canadian federal and provincial employment law and human rights legislation; familiarity with United States employment law is an asset
  • Significant experience in representation and case development in unjust dismissals, grievance arbitration, and human rights complaints
  • Proven expertise working with complex unionized environments and advising on labour strategy
  • Substantial experience in leading employment investigations and providing training to colleagues or clients
  • Expertise in conflict resolution and mediation
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships at all levels
  • Proactive, flexible, and comfortable in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment, which demands a high level of energy and commitment

Work Conditions

  • Ability to travel across Canada and the United States <35%, to offices and project sites as required
