The Principal Engineer – Turbine Mechanical serves as a recognized subject matter expert and provides advanced technical leadership within the Large Turbine COE. This role is responsible for driving engineering excellence, supporting projects ranging from moderate to high complexity, and mentoring the next generation of engineers. The Principal Engineer collaborates cross-functionally to drive rigorous risk management while fostering innovative solutions to meet critical business and customer objectives. The position reports directly to the Sub-COE Leader of Large Turbines.

Job Description

Role & Responsibilities

  • Technical Authority: Serve as the primary technical authority for hydro turbine design, establishing engineering standards and driving high-impact decisions that dictate project success.

  • End-to-End Leadership: Lead the full design, analysis, and implementation lifecycle for moderate-to-high complexity projects, including First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) major New Product Introduction (NPI) initiatives.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Act as the global technical resource for product design and modularity, providing guidance to project teams and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Engineering Rigor & Quality: Enforce technical rigor to ensure safe, high-quality output, remaining actively engaged throughout the design process and reviewing/approving critical documentation to ensure compliance with global standards.

  • Point of Contact: Serve as the definitive technical liaison for Product Design, interfacing with suppliers, sub-suppliers, and field support teams.

  • Innovation & Industry Leadership: Stay at the forefront of technology by monitoring industry trends, attending professional conferences, and fostering relationships with academic institutions.

  • Problem Resolution: Lead cross-disciplinary problem-solving efforts; identify system-level risks and implement effective mitigation strategies.

  • Continuous Improvement: Drive turbine design advancements by leveraging Lean methodologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize safety, quality, and product costs.

  • System-Level Integration: Develop broad cross-functional expertise by collaborating with adjacent teams to deliver integrated system solutions.

  • Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Coach and mentor the next generation of engineers; facilitate a culture of continuous knowledge transfer across global teams.

  • Standardization: Spearhead the development of design practices, technical standards, and process improvements to streamline hydro turbine development.

  • Cultural Leadership: Shape the Turbine Design team’s identity and culture, fostering an environment of inclusion, psychological safety, accountability, and high-performance collaboration.

  • Curiosity & Service: Exercise intellectual curiosity to continuously improve products and processes, while acting as a proactive and helpful resource for all levels of the global engineering organization.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Mechanical Engineering, with a minimum of 15+ years of specialized experience in hydro turbine design.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep subject matter expertise in the design, stress analysis, and structural calculation of complete hydro turbine systems.

  • Cultural Agility: Open-minded and experienced in multicultural environments, with a proven ability to work efficiently across global Centers of Excellence (COE) and cross-regional teams.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in additional languages is considered an asset.
