Position Summary

We are seeking an Automation Scientist/Engineer to lead automation initiatives supporting ADC Discovery within Pfizer’s Oncology Research Unit. This role partners with subject matter experts in the Protein and Bioanalytical Sciences, Pharmacology, and Biology teams to analyze current processes and identify impactful automation improvements in cell screening, protein and ADC production, and sample distribution. The Engineer will drive and support projects that streamline workflows, enhance Key Productivity Indicators, and accelerate cancer therapeutics research. These activities will require onsite work at our Bothell, WA campus.

Principal Responsibilities

• Develop and implement automated processes to support workflows across the ADC Discovery research unit, with an emphasis on scalability, robustness, and ease of use. This includes protein and ADC production, cell-based screening, and sample logistics
• Validate and optimize automation protocols to ensure reproducibility, efficiency, and alignment with evolving scientific needs
• Program and troubleshoot laboratory automation systems (e.g., Tecan Fluent, Hamilton STAR, SPT Labtech) to enable flexible and high-performing workflows
• Drive throughput and productivity gains by identifying bottlenecks and deploying automation strategies that reduce manual effort and increase operational efficiency
• Leverage knowledge of existing platforms and technologies to design integrated solutions that maintain Pfizer's competitive edge in oncology therapeutics
• Manage timelines and deliverables across multiple projects, ensuring milestone achievement and proactive risk mitigation
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders across Protein and Bioanalytical Sciences, Pharmacology, and Biology teams to align automation efforts with scientific objectives

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Engineering or related field, with 9+ years of experience, or Master’s Degree with 7+ years of experience in laboratory setting, including 3+ years developing laboratory automation of varying complexity
• Programming skills in C+ and Python to enhance automated platforms
• Ability to program liquid handling robotics with strong knowledge of liquid class optimization
• Ability to lead projects independently, with an understanding of when to seek guidance
• Strong troubleshooting and automation methodology capabilities
• Desire to assist colleagues when needed with automation related issues
• Strong track record of making data-driven decisions
• Demonstrated use of metrics to convey automation improvements
• Strong communication skills with ability build strong cross functional relationships and to report progress to leadership

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with Tecan, Hamilton, and SPT Labtech liquid handlers, including end-to-end coding of new methods
• Experience writing plans, protocols, and reports for equipment qualification, experimental design, feasibility studies, and validation
• Experience as a bench scientist performing protein purification and/or cell-based assays
• Experience applying automation to protein purification
• Experience applying automation to cell-based assays
• Prior experience with automated freezers and automating sample logistics
• Experience with process mapping and Gantt charting
• Experience building customized parts for improved automation
• Experience with automated data integration with ELN applications

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $90,900.00 to $151,500.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 12.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
