The Stroke Data Registrar supports the VCU Health System’s adult or pediatric Stroke Programs and organizational requirements for certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission and recommended by the 2023 American Heart Association Scientific Statement describing the ideal foundational requirements for Stroke Programs. This includes identification of cases for inclusion into the registry database, abstraction of data from various sources including the electronic medical record, prehospital databases, and other data sources.

Essential Job Statements

  • The Stroke Registrar identifies ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients based on final billing ICD code and consistent with the ICD-10 codes prescribed by TJC.  

  • Performs on-going data entry into the Stroke Patient Data Registry, adhering to the data management protocols set forth to ensure accurate and timely reporting of data to the organization and regulatory agencies. 

  • Reports complications and quality issues to the Supervisor. 

  • Assists with performance improvement activities.

Employment Qualifications 


Required Education: 

High School Diploma or GED 

Combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.  

Preferred Education: 

Associate’s Degree in any field that includes two semesters of medical terminology and Anatomy/Physiology 

Licensure/Certification Required: 

Licensure/Certification Preferred: 

Healthcare certification (EMT, RN, certified professional coder/specialist, registered health Information Technician (RHIT), Medical Scribe Certification, medical assistant or equivalent) 

Minimum Qualifications 

Years and Type of Required Experience 

Proficiency with MS Office software including email, MS-Word, and MS-Excel 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

1 or more years of experience with medical terminology and acronyms related to diagnosis, procedures, complications and comorbid conditions. 

Cultural Responsiveness 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: 

1 or more years of experience in medical data abstracting/coding. Abstracting experience using current requirements by state and national regulatory bodies. 

Experience with accurate and timely data entry and verification to maintain high standards of data quality control.
