About this unit:
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 22-bed ICU located in the Meijer Heart Center specializing in highly acute post-cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. This team is only hiring for night shift, however the initial orientation weeks will require daytime availability during weekdays. Nurse techs are able to care for a wide range of patients and devices including heart/lung transplant patients, post-operative open-heart patients, patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), CentriMag, Impella, and long-term ventricular assist devices (VAD). Experts in caring for the most critically ill patients in our area and throughout Michigan. We are at the forefront of cardiac medicine, engaging in cutting-edge innovation and research.
Scope of Work:
Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant for patients.
Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need based with similar training. If they are outside of a unit with their similar training (like a med-surg NT going to ICU or HDVCH) they would typically just be acting as a safety attendant. But all typical units they are floated to would have very similar expectations and training.
Orientation
Orientation weeks will require flexibility to train during variable weekdays for 8-12 weeks, before phasing into regular night shifts. The 1st, 2nd and 4th week will all include 8am-4:30pm classroom time with our Nurse Education Team and our hands on training shifts on the nursing floor will be 7am-7pm shifts.
