Purpose of the job:

Primarily to provide legal advice, transaction support and perform legal risk management in relation to the corporate and investment banking business of MUFG within APAC, including (i) corporate banking coverage (e.g., syndicated and bilateral loans), (ii) investment banking products including project finance, aviation finance, acquisition finance, real estate finance and ESG finance and (iii) regional transaction banking business (e.g., export credit finance, receivables purchase transactions and commodity finance).

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic           

Having one MUFG, one Legal in mind to serve the internal stakeholders; Checking for updates of all the relevant laws and regulations from time to time.

Financial

Monitor the legal costs to be spent e.g. obtain fee quotes from different law firms before proceeding further.

Customer

Primarily to provide legal advice, transaction support and perform legal risk management in relation to the corporate and investment banking business of MUFG within APAC, including (i) corporate banking coverage (e.g., syndicated and bilateral loans), (ii) investment banking products including project finance, aviation finance, acquisition finance, real estate finance and ESG finance and (iii) regional transaction banking business (e.g., export credit finance, receivables purchase transactions and commodity finance).  

People

Liaise with clients, external lawyers and other transaction parties on transactions within the designated product coverage.  Collaborate closely with Head Office Legal in Tokyo, International legal functions in other regions and other local legal units within the branches and subsidiaries of MUFG within APAC.  Ensure that MUFG APAC’s senior management is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business are and major legislative changes.

Other/ Control

Control of legal risk, specifically litigation management risk by providing timely guidance to the business units in handling dispute and certain pre-dispute actions (legal hold, dawn raid, investigation support). Provision of legal advice on the negotiation of vendor contracts to reflect services to be acquired by MUFG.

Qualification & Experience

  • Common law qualified lawyer
  • 5+ years of post-qualification relevant experience with high level of familiarity with banking and finance transaction documents including APMLA documents
  • Strong technical knowledge of legal framework surrounding finance transactions generally, and possess strong document drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage heavy workloads and tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage and effectively communicate with demanding stakeholders
  • Prior in-house legal experience at a financial institution would be an advantage although not a must.
  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements relating to finance and banking
  • Fluent Cantonese and Mandarin required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
