Nurse Associate Externship – Ohio Summer 2025

The Nurse Associate Externship (NAE) is a paid, 10-week program for nursing students entering their final semester(s) to work one-on-one with RNs in our system of hospitals as well as learn from Cleveland Clinic nurse educators and fellow externs in a classroom setting. The Externship is offered in two clinical settings: Traditional Program (inpatient areas) and Perioperative Program (surgery and PACU).
Program dates are May 12 – July 19, 2025 and June 2 – August 9, 2025.
Select schools are partnered with Cleveland Clinic to participate in an Advanced Nurse Associate Externship. Those participating in the Advanced Program or the Perioperative Program MUST be available to participate in the May 12 – July 19, 2025 session.
Externship placements are offered at 12 of our Ohio hospital locations and in multiple specialty areas to include: Medical, Surgical, Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Women’s Health, Transplant, Observation, Surgery, and PACU.
A caregiver in this position must have open availability and expect to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the ten-week program. Workdays are Sunday-Saturday and hours include days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform basic patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). These may include collecting vital signs, weighing patients, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, and transferring/transporting patients.
Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental or emotional conditions to an RN.
Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Current enrollment in an accredited nursing school (ASN, BSN, or BSN/MN program) and entering their last year/semester upon completion of the externship. Please include anticipated graduation date on resume.
Must hold (or be willing to obtain prior to start date) a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
If participating in the Advanced Program: concurrently enroll in the perspective school course and be able to perform advanced skills, including medication administration and IV therapy under the direction of a preceptor. The contracted school will have designated faculty that will participate in the evaluation of the student (NAE) in conjunction with course objectives and clinical requirements. Only those attending the identified partnered schools will be eligible to participate in the Advanced Program.
Physical Requirements:
Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
