About ThedaCare Genetics:
The ThedaCare Genetics department consists of 4 Certified Genetic Counselors and 4 Genetic Counseling Assistants. We are a busy and growing department that serves oncology and non-oncology specialties with potential travel to multiple locations. We are currently recruiting for a full time Genetic Counseling Assistant to partner with a 4th Genetic Counselor.
Job Description:
Facilitate genetic testing process, including identification of laboratories, researching appropriate testing and sample submission requirements including preparing genetic test ordering forms in order to support the genetic counselor. Assist in providing patient care related to the clinical program, including collection of medical records/family history, patient telephone intakes, sending out specimens, and coordinating family member testing to create the patient pedigree and prepare risk assessments using genetics software programs. Initiate the documentation of personal and family medical history within the EMR to aid in the genetic counseling session. Complete of informed consent and genetic testing paperwork with patient in order to initiate testing. Discuss cost and insurance information pertaining to genetic testing so patient can make informed decisions. Prepare DNA samples for transportation, box, and mail out specimens to external laboratories. Facilitate outgoing referrals. Write routine correspondence, including routine follow up letters to patients with known genetic syndromes or letters of medical necessity to provide continuity of care.
Qualifications:
Two years of experience in a healthcare setting, two years of education in a scientific field, or a combination of both
Physical Demands:
Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
Work Environment:
Infrequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents
Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients
Use of computers throughout the work day
Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
Normally works in climate controlled office environment
Frequent sitting with movement throughout office space
