The Property & Inland Marine Division specializes in offering property and inland marine products to the Construction, Transportation and Energy sectors. The Division offers customizable solutions to fit each unique need for commercial inland marine, including cargo, contractor’s equipment, builder’s risk, and commercial property. We are solution driven, specialty focused and service minded.

We are seeking a Divisional Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Underwriting to join our team. This individual is responsible for a broad spectrum of technical underwriting, pricing and coverage issues for inland marine and commercial property insurance and reinsurance in the Division’s Headquarters. They should bring strong leadership in cross-functional teams ensuring high-quality underwriting, adequate pricing, innovative product development, sensible business processes, and regulatory compliance. 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in inland marine insurance, reinsurance, underwriting, and will be responsible for handling individual risk referrals, ensuring SOX compliance, and conducting underwriting reviews. This role requires a technical expert who can provide oversight and approval, working closely with field underwriters and managers to maintain and update underwriting guidelines and products. This individual will work out of the Property & Inland Marine’s Division’s headquarters based at Great Americans headquarters in Cincinnati, OH.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Acts as a resource for field offices with respect to technical underwriting issues.  
  • Manage and process referrals from field underwriters, providing clear approval or denial with detailed reasoning and appropriate documentation. 
  • Provide advice and guidance to the field to enable the company to achieve business objectives. 
  • Collaborate closely with the Divisional President and Divisional Underwriting Officer in conducting all strategic objectives with respect to these underwriting duties and responsibilities. 
  • Ensure compliance with SOX regulations and conduct regular underwriting reviews. 
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of underwriting guidelines and product knowledge and provide guidance to the team. 
  • Function as a key point of contact for regulatory and policy compliance, ensuring all activities meet legal and internal standards. 
  • Maintains relationship with our reinsurance partners ensuring the terms and conditions that best support P&IM’s current risk profile and future goals.
  • Conducts travel (40%) to perform underwriting reviews, meet with clients as needed, meet with reinsurance partners and attend industry conferences. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, with background in Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.  
  • 10+ years of inland marine underwriting experience, with exposure to reinsurance and referral processes. 
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex risks and develop sound underwriting strategies. 
  • Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Insurance industry designations such as AMIM, CPCU and ARe are desired.
  • Participation in insurance industry organizations such as IMUA, CPCU or other insurance committees or boards are desired.
