Position Summary

Position supports the Dermatopathology Center Laboratory clinical support service by performing pre-analytic duties prior to laboratory testing. Duties include customer support, sample accessioning, patient registration, insurance verification, and sample procurement. Position demonstrates a high level of competency in all aspects of pre-analytic functions for the clinical support services team. This position is located in a clinical lab setting with no direct patient contact. Any patient interaction occurs via telephone or email.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides customer support for clients, faculty and staff in a friendly and helpful manner while providing a positive, professional, courteous and empathetic understanding to all customers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform all clinical support functions with minimal supervision through independent judgment and good reasoning ability.
  • Provides troubleshooting support for pre-analytic processes and demonstrates knowledge and understanding of insurance plans.
  • Assists in training of new staff by ensuring knowledge and understanding of standardized policies and procedures.
  • Provides cross coverage as needed for other job functions and acts as a role model for the team.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities.
  • Assists supervisor in root cause analysis and identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Generates corrected and amended reports to assist laboratory directors and faculty in support of clinical reporting.
  • Ensures timely communication regarding reports back to clinicians.
  • Effectively prioritizes workload to ensure completion of duties within stated expectations.
  • Accepts and electronically receives laboratory specimens for all sections of the laboratory, as well as pathology material, including registering patients into medical record and laboratory information systems.
  • Places necessary orders for testing as requested by the pathologists into the lab information system and prepares and sends pathology materials to reference laboratories in support of clinical testing not provided internally.
  • Transcribes pathology quick text codes for preparation of gross, microscopic and final diagnosis results.
  • Assists with additional projects as needed.

Salary Range

$20.57 - $30.84 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
