Position Summary:
This role is responsible to manage the transportation functions, which may include supervising drivers, dispatching, routing and/or planning (to include for-hire cartage and/or backhauls), to ensure safe, timely and accurate delivery to customers. Partners with, and coordinates transportation related activities with other departments such as warehouse distribution, maintenance, etc. May work within a nonunion or union driver's environment depending on assigned location.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Responsible for the management of the transportation operations as assigned, which may include supervising drivers, dispatching, routing and/or planning (to include for-hire cartage and/or backhauls), to ensure safe, timely and accurate delivery to customers.
Work with cross-functional departments (i.e., warehouse distribution, maintenance, customer service) as it relates to the transportation operations and ensure prompt and timely resolution of any issues.
Responsible for managing, planning and coordinating deliveries, backhauls and for-hire cartage; partner with other departments to determine the most efficient, economical and cost-effective routes and shipping methods and to ensure high quality, cost effective and timely logistics services that meet customer expectations and business objectives.
May negotiate rates for third party services/contract drivers based on business need.
Manage the dispatch process based on the required deliveries/shipment schedule; ensure efficient transportation planning and scheduling of drivers and deliveries to maximize resources, reduce miles and ensure efficient utilization of equipment and drivers within the assigned location(s).
Manage and ensure department compliance with DOT/CSA, OSHA and other government regulatory agencies.
Ensure Transportation Supervisors review drivers hours of service (HOS) requirements, trip reporting, and other DOT/CSA requirements and record-keeping and address any issues in a timely manner.
Partner with the Fleet Operations and Compliance team to ensure compliance with DOT/CSA and safety regulations, review reporting and compliance of the on-board computer system, and to make recommendations for the replacement and maintenance of equipment.
Oversee the analysis of transportation activities; recommend and/or implement changes based on the results of such analysis.
Develop and maintain on-going reporting to track transportation activities and expenses to include, but not limited to, cost per mile, operating ratio, driver/truck utilization and availability, as well as delivery performance (accuracy, timeliness and customer satisfaction).
Monitor equipment maintenance and availability of equipment for the assigned location(s).
Ensure procedures for the efficient operation and utilization of equipment is followed; address any issues or concerns promptly.
Work with maintenance team to ensure equipment (tractor/trailer) is in proper working condition; ensure preventative and corrective maintenance, and inspections are completed in a timely manner.
Maintain, promote and reinforce safety programs and security awareness.
Report, record, investigate and/or address any issues, accidents or work-related injuries accordingly to ensure compliance with company policies as well as OSHA and DOT/CSA regulations.
Develop, maintain and update policies, procedures and processes to improve operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance.
Communicate and/or implement approved/required changes to management and transportation department.
Responsible for the transportation operations P&L to include, but not limited to, expense and capital budgeting, cost controls, revenue and productivity objectives, and operational execution. Also responsible for equipment utilization and efficient fuel mileage; identify overall opportunities for cost savings, efficiencies and continuous improvement.
Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with warehouse management, managed freight and/or customers; work with various contacts as necessary on schedules, changes to pick-up or delivery schedules or any transportation related issues/concerns.
Participate in labor relations negotiations and renewal of contracts, recommend contract changes, administer union contracts and manage union matters, and/or grievance and arbitration procedures as required.
Responsible for department management including staffing, training, performance management and career development of associates, and developing and monitoring department goals.
Maintain current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends and best practices in Transportation/Logistics; make recommendations to improve current programs and processes and to ensure company legal compliance (i.e., DOT/CSA, OSHA, etc.).
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Associate degree (Required) in Logisitic's. (Or bachelor's degree) in Transportation Supply Chain Management or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five years transportation planning/logistics/dispatch experience.
Ability to work a flexible schedule and must be available on-call during evening and weekend hours as needed to address issues (i.e., equipment breakdowns, weather emergencies, etc.); general schedule is Monday - Friday.
Experience with transportation operations and related systems, expertise in governmental safety and regulatory compliance (i.e., DOT/CSA, OSHA, etc.).
Two years supervisory/management experience.
Strong knowledge of transportation/logistics; an understanding of transportation activities such as dispatch, DOT/CSA requirements, backhauls, contract carriers, Bill of Lading, Manifest, etc.
Knowledge of transportation on-boarding software required; experience with Cadec or Omnitracs preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organization, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
Good leadership abilities with capability to work in a hands-on environment.
Good analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, and business acumen skills.
Ability to work across business units, as well as with vendors and third-party services within a time-sensitive work environment.
Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Ability to travel up to 15% as necessary.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Employees must be able to work weekends, holidays, days and night hours, and overtime as necessary and as assigned, and must be able to work in the condition specified for 8-10 hours shift as assigned. Travel requirements vary by assignment.
