Job Description Summary:

This position performs facility coding and abstracting functions of Inpatient.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree (Required)AAPC - American Academy of Professional Coders - AAPC American Academy of Professional CodersAAPC American Academy of Professional CodersAAPC American Academy of Professional Coders, AHIMA - American Health Information Management Association - American Health Information Management AssociationAmerican Health Information Management AssociationAmerican Health Information Management Association

Education, Credentials, Licenses: Coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC or completion of a coding program from an accredited coding program or equivalent experience and demonstrated knowledge ICD-10CM and PCS classification systems, Advanced Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, Inpatient reimbursement schemes. Recent graduates must sit for certification exam within 90 days of hire and achieve a passing score on the exam.

Must be eligible to sit for certification exam within 6 months of hire or within 6 months of completion of the coding program and pass the AAPC and/or AHIMA certification exam.


Specialized Knowledge: ICD-10 CM and PCS classification systems, Advanced Anatomy & Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Medical Terminology, inpatient reimbursement schemes. Knowledge of Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC), Present on Admission (POA), Severity of Illness (SOI), Risk of Mortality (ROM), MS-DRG’s, APR-DRG’s and Quality outcome indicators.  Knowledge of clinical lab and radiology results for physician queries. Knowledge of Clinical Documentation improvement programs. Knowledge of UB-04 and UHDDS abstracting elements.


Kind and Length of Experience: 1-2 years of acute care inpatient coding experience in a hospital setting. Experience using Optum Coding and Reimbursement application (CAC) and Epic EMR preferred.
