Site Sustainability Lead

Location – Barnard Castle

GSK Barnard Castle is a key secondary manufacturing site and has invested heavily in industry 4.0 state of the art, bespoke equipment to support sustained new product introductions and volume increases, and as a key supplier of some of GSK’s blockbuster products, the site contributes revenues of ~$2Bn annually.

The purpose of this role is to drive the required cross-functional activities for the Barnard Castle Site to deliver its overall sustainability goals in support of the company sustainability targets:

  • Being the single point of accountability for the successful execution of cross-functional workstreams required to deliver the Barnard Castle Site sustainability goals.
  • Managing workstream coordination, communication and delivery across the various departments and activities to support all campus sustainability activity. These may be engineering based, technical, procurement driven, cultural changes etc.
  • To liaise and coordinate with Central sustainability activities to ensure we leverage resources as well as meet the targets and KPI’s for the Barnard Castle Site.
  • To work with SLT and on-site resources to highlight, champion, prioritise and own the necessary activities to achieve the Barnard Castle Site sustainability targets.
  • To manage the business change activity to ensure robust business processes and solution are put in place to sustain any projects or activities implemented on the Site.

Create and implement a sustainability program for the site focusing on reducing energy usage, water, and both hazardous and non-hazardous waste, while improving manufacturing and support process efficiency

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages the overall Site sustainability plan – coordinating the various cross functional workstreams. Coaching and supporting workstream leads to identify/mitigate risks.
  • To be the Site Single Point of Accountability for Sustainability activities ensuring activities are resources, planned and executed to deliver the overall goals and targets. Any issues and risks to be escalated for support through the appropriate governance and performance management forums.
  • Manage the Communication and Stakeholder Management Plan to ensure compelling, consistent and timely communication of key messages. Create clear messaging for wider audiences.
  • Programme manage the various activities across the Site and ensure clear delivery plans are in place and being executed.
  • Connects regularly with workstream leads, including PMO leads, and holds regular governance meetings to ensure visibility of key milestones and risks are clearly understood, escalated and mitigated to ensure successful implementation of sustainability activities
  • Accountable for change readiness assessments to ensure the business change plan is comprehensive and aligned to the Site targets. Addressing any impacts of change prior to deployment
  • Ensure use of GPS or ADP principles and/or Business Change Management toolkit throughout the programme, increasing the business change capability of the site project team.
  • Liaison with Central Teams and Functions to understand organisational plans and targets, communicate the Barnard Castle Site plans and progress and to leverage support as required

Basic Qualifications & Skills

  • University Degree in Engineering, Science, or related fields OR equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated matrix leadership skills, including balancing delivery of tactical and strategic objectives.
  • Strong programme management experience and proven delivery record.
  • Operational experience with knowledge of change management methodology and GPS standards.
  • Ability to work independently, operating in complex and ambiguous situations with high levels of uncertainty
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence with or without authority across all grade levels.
  • Exceptional communications and presentation skills, able to facilitate interfaces with diverse audiences and synthesize the most critical insights from large amounts of information.
  • Ability to understand, map out and scenario plan the complexities and interdependencies of multiple programmes.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading and driving change to deliver improvement initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering, Science or related fields
  • Highly proficient in the use of MS PowerPoint and MS Excel applications.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing (cGMP and QMS) with a unionised & cross functional team workforce.
  • Focus on output, setting clear goals and tracking realization to ensure tangible progress and momentum in each workstream
