Sr. Director, Enterprise Data Science Council Program Lead

Enterprise Data Science Overview

Recently, Gilead launched an Enterprise Data Science Council. The purpose of this council is to enable the coordinated and compliant scaling of data science across the enterprise, while preserving the strength and agility of the existing business-embedded data science teams.  

To achieve this, the Enterprise Data Science Council will take on four key roles: 

  • Support and strengthen the data science community of practice.  
  • Establish enterprise data science policies (ex., Enterprise data and AI governance).
  • Coordinate and create transparency into data science use cases and investments across Gilead
  • Extend our data science capability to pursue cross-functional innovation and enable functions with limited data science resources

Job Overview

The Senior Director, Enterprise Data Science Council Program Lead will work closely with the senior data science leaders, in particular the current Council Chair, Senior Vice President of Clinical Data Sciences. The primary responsibility of the Program Lead role will be to launch and operationalize the council by delivering tasks including (but not limited to): define a charter precisely encompassing the council scope and objectives, establish a program plan with clear priorities & quarterly commitments, and build working norms of the council that model a strong decision framework (Decide, Advise, and Inform). Once launched, the role will be instrumental hosting discussions, creating project plans, coordinating tasks and working groups across various functions, guiding the council’s focus on decisions which have a large impact on the enterprise, and tracking and monitoring results.

The position requires high proficiency in project management with proven ability to deliver results across multiple functions and disciplines. The candidate will need to conjugate ideas from various stakeholders (internal and external) and use that information to advance workstreams and guide important decisions related to the council’s four primary roles.  The Program Lead will work through ambiguous and uncharted settings at times, working closely with data engineers, scientists, leaders, etc… to establish new practices, draft well-defined policies, and harness the power and community of cross-functional teams to grow data science capabilities across the enterprise.  

Key Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Be a strong leader in working closely with cross-functional council members to deliver top results across all four objective areas of the Enterprise Data Science Council.
  • Be active in team discussions through preparedness and demonstration of strong organizational skills that ensure progressive momentum and traction on all council workstreams.
  • Collaborate with the council to define key measurements which validate the performance and success of the council.
  • Gain endorsement & alignment on council priorities and keep the team focused on those dependent tasks and actions. The Program Lead will be empowered to redirect the council, as needed, to top priorities in order to remain committed to scope. In addition, the Program Lead will need to be flexible to pivot or redirect the council to any changing needs or emerging business requirements.
  • Develop robust result scorecards and provide routine updates on the results and progress of the council to Gilead Senior Leadership.
  • Superlative project management and organization skills to develop detailed project plans, formally document decisions and actions, and monitor and track status of all program related activities.
  • Work closely with the Council Process Lead, process author(s), and technical writer(s) to establish documentation timelines and support decisions regarding structure, formatting, and approach for policy and governance content.
  • Monitor, support and consult on training material with Council Process Lead and Bridge Organization.
  • Build knowledge base and strategy in sharing council outputs with wider Data Science Community. Partner with stakeholders across the industry on symposiums and conferences which flourish and seek to build data science capabilities and practices across the organization. 
  • Leverage the decision-making framework to hold various members accountable in making decisions and ensuring the right members are involved to consult and inform on decisions.
  • Organize, schedule, and document keynotes on all council and associated meetings.
  • Maintain all council program project plans and timelines by consistently updating to current events.
  • Research subject matter (requiring understanding of scientific literature and regulatory developments particularly those in the field of technology and data sciences) and, as necessary, send as pre-reads in advance to help prepare the audience for discussion agenda topics. 
  • Provide strategic direction and input to council through active listening and making connections to previous council discussions or past insights.

Qualifications

  • PharmD/PhD with 8+ years’ relevant experience
  • MA/MS/MBA with 10+ years’ relevant experience
  • BA/BS with 12+ years’ relevant experience
  • Strong experience and knowledge in the field of technology, Pharmaceutical/BioTechnology, clinical and/or data sciences is preferred.
  • Superior track record in project management (Project Management Professional certificate is preferred), with proven experience in delivering results across multidisciplinary work (e.g. legal, commercial, development).
  • Excellent communication skills in being able to take complex topics and/or problems and relaying messaging in simple, logical terms.
  • Expertise working in global teams, across various time-zones and those of a hybrid work matrix (FTE and Functional Service Provider (FSP) staff) to achieve project goals.
  • Strong problem-solver and able to work through areas of ambiguity by charting a course forward and setting clear direction for the team.
  • Excellent writing skills, documenting important outcomes from team discussions.
  • Ability to problem-solve using data-driven approaches to help determine the best path forward.
  • Excellent customer-focus with proven track-record in building relationships through superlative communication and writing skills.
  • Expertise working in global teams, across various time-zones to achieve clinical trial milestones.
  • Passionate about continuous improvement w/in the field of data science and establishing new procedures which embrace technological solutions and/or automation via advanced data solutions.
  • Able to support teams through bottlenecks and areas of resource impact and positive drive to quickly adjust as needed to changing goals or business deliverables.
  • Responsibly manage and track financial budget and expenses (investment(s)) related to council.
  • Superior communication and personal skills to help coach and mentor external CRO workforce.
  • Experience leading complex changes, which require in-depth change management and transition plans.
  • Ability to motivate large diverse teams to achieve a common set of goals.
  • Strong experience in data analysis and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Able to lead and mentor effective cross functional teams.


 

The salary range for this position is: $216,070.00 - $279,620.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
