Scope of Position

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute’s (OSUCCC-James) mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in their own plan of care, and reducing the length of hospitalization, the staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement, the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost-effective care.

 

Position Summary

The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and their family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating, and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.

 

Minimum Education Required

2-Year College Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in nursing

Additional Education Desired

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in nursing

 

Required Qualifications

Degree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. Current Ohio license or interim permit.

*Experience in relevant care setting preferred.

Additional Information:

Medical–Surgical/Progressive Care Unit provides comprehensive, patient‑centered care for individuals requiring both MS and higher‑acuity PCU services. With an additional overflow area available when needed, our team is equipped to flex efficiently during surges in patient volume or complexity. We maintain an average length of stay of approximately six days, allowing us to deliver efficient, coordinated, and outcomes‑focused care. We specialize in the care of incarcerated individuals from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC), providing a secure, structured, and compassionate environment that prioritizes safety for patients, staff, and correctional partners. Our team collaborates closely with trained correctional officers and follows established safety protocols designed to protect everyone on the unit while ensuring patients receive equitable, dignified healthcare. Caring for corrections patients requires a heightened awareness of trauma‑informed practice, clear communication, respect for privacy within security constraints, and consistent adherence to hospital and ODRC guidelines. Our unit cares for a broad range of medical conditions, including general medicine, urology, cardiac, neurovascular, oncology, infectious disease, and complex chronic conditions. Because of the diverse needs of our patient population, our staff maintain strong clinical expertise, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Across all levels of care, our nurses, providers, and interdisciplinary partners are passionate about delivering exceptional, equitable care.
