Data Scientist

BioPharm Process Research (BPR) is an early process development function responsible for de-risking and accelerating biopharmaceutical assets into clinical manufacture and onward late-stage development and commercial manufacture. Due to recent investments in scale-down, high-throughput process and analytical technology within BPR an exciting new informatics opportunity exists to fully exploit the data generated to deliver deeper and faster understanding of cell line and molecule quality in our process design space.

The successful candidate would support data driven advances in cell line generation, characterisation and selection and the onward process de-risking occurring in BPR. The candidate will join the Digital & Data Analytics (DDA) team and work with other data and lab scientists to deliver the ambitious digital plan of BPR. There is an expectation that the candidate will stay connected with the wider digital community within GSK at its global sites and contribute to development of good practices.

In this role you will:

  • Build and improve complex interactive scientific dashboards to enable data exploration and decision making for scientists in the department
  • Apply advanced data analysis and data wrangling to identify relationships between key cellular and process characteristics and product quality and determine methods to exploit and apply this knowledge in the BPR portfolio workflow.
  • Contribute to the development of predictive models as required, using data generated across BPR and partner groups, to answer portfolio questions and enable data-driven decision making.
  • Train and share knowledge and ways of working internally to upskill existing staff as required. Work as part of a multi-disciplinary department to identify the most impactful workflows that will derive unique cell, process and molecule understanding.
  • Seek all opportunities to develop and maintain a strong IP position.
  • Represent BPR as an expert in internal and external meetings and projects contributing to informatics strategy as required.

Why join us:

  • To use your skills to improve patients’ life
  • To get the opportunity to apply data science, ML and modelling in industrial settings
  • To develop your knowledge and expertise in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • To join a team of fantastic people and scientists

Why you?

Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in engineering, data science, mathematical, statistical or other related discipline
  • Good understanding of scientific principles
  • Alternatively, bachelor’s degree on life sciences or related field with further specialization on data science
  • Very good knowledge of at least one programming language, e.g., Python, SQL, R or similar
  • Hands on experience with data analytics & wrangling techniques and their application
  • An ability to work as part of a cross-functional team, engaging other scientists with complementary skill sets and work with different datasets and objectives between projects
  • An excitement to work with scientists and participate in the efforts of upskilling your colleagues in the data science space

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PhD in mathematical, statistical, engineering, scientific, or other related discipline
  • A background in biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology or relevant will be a very strong plus. More specifically, experience with some range of CMC activities, including cell line development, upstream, downstream processing and/or process analytical technologies
  • Experience in creating dashboards and combining data from different databases together
  • Experience with mechanistic modelling on top of the very good knowledge of data analytics/ML techniques.
  • Good knowledge of using tools like Github for code development/versioning
  • A ‘disruptive’ mindset, proposing novel approaches to challenging scientific questions
