Summary/Job Purpose:

Provides day to day supervision of underwriters and underwriting process to ensure that standards for quality and underwriting control are met.  Assists in monitoring business process to ensure effective and efficient workflows are maintained.  Works with underwriters to increase knowledge and support decision making on account level or business practice issues. Underwrites complex accounts.

Essential Functions:

Percentage of Time:

  • Allocates underwriting resources to handle minor fluctuations of individual workloads to ensure timeliness of work processing, including policy issuance and timely collection of premiums due.
  • Conducts departmental self – audits and manages self audit process including reporting and monitoring of corrective actions in a timely and effective manner.   Identifies and recommends training needs based on self-audit trends.
  • Reviews and evaluates referrals from underwriters based on and expanded letter of authority.
  • Is responsible for mentoring and training underwriting staff by providing technical training to underwriting staff to increase skill levels and to ensure appropriate skill levels are maintained
  • Serves as a liaison for the Underwriting Department in day to day relations with the Operations Department to ensure all questions are answered and accounts are serviced in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the Account Management process to ensure the ultimate account servicing is provided.
  • Underwrites difficult, complex accounts and serves as underwriter for some key producers.
  • Has individual production goals that will contribute to the revenue of the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Assists zone manager in the hiring process including interviewing and assessing candidates to ensure appropriate fit for the position.

Education and Experience Required: 

Diploma/Degree & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university is preferred, High School Diploma or GED is required. 
  • 10+ years related commercial lines experience including prior supervisory or management experience.
  • Highly knowledgeable in all Commercial Lines and company underwriting standards and practices.
  • Periodic travel to agencies, customers, insurance functions and home office.
