Reporting to the Project Controls Manager, the Project Controls Specialist/Sr. Estimator plays a key role in shaping the financial foundation of our regional project portfolio. You’ll oversee the creation of project estimates from initial scoping to final delivery, ensuring cost-effective and value-driven results. Additionally, work with Project Controls and stakeholders on benchmarking efforts to deliver dependable cost and schedule performance metrics. Minimum Requirements:

  • Technical diploma or university degree.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant estimating experience.
  • Strong knowledge of project management and project controls principles, including estimating, cost control, planning/scheduling, and risk analysis.
  • Demonstrated capability in conducting and applying benchmarking analysis to improve estimate accuracy and cost predictability.
  • AACEI Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and review estimates for all project stages (Pre-Scoping, Scoping, Concept Select, DBM, FEED, Check) for both brownfield and greenfield projects.
  • Assess project definition, scope maturity, execution strategy, and schedule for each estimate class; identify and communicate key risks and opportunities.
  • Deliver comprehensive cost estimating services, adhering to RPS PC Governance standards and procedures.
  • Collaborate with project teams to identify alternatives for improving performance and reducing costs.
  • Ensure effective cooperation and information sharing across all disciplines for accurate estimate development.
  • Foster a cohesive estimating team and maintain strong relationships with EP Contractors, Construction, internal Suncor groups, contract resources, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure accuracy and timely delivery of estimates.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with project teams, resolving and escalating issues as needed.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of cost components in both Upstream/Downstream projects.
  • Facilitate the development and execution of benchmarking plans and deliverables, ensuring integration of benchmarking results into project estimates and decision-making
  • Exhibit strong communication, numerical, and data analysis skills.

Location and other Key Details:

  • This position is office-based, with a preferred location at the Syncrude site in Fort McMurray. Candidates may also be considered for the Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Avenue S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
