Working primarily with Agency and Banca Distribution channels, this position is accountable for equitable and sound underwriting decisions for all New Business insurance applications.

Responsibilities:

UNDERWRITING

  • Check for completion of documents submitted, sort and match requirements for underwriting
  • Classify occupation; assess the build, family history, financial, residential/geographical risk, and medical information.
  • Order requirements to assess risk,  i.e. Medical Examination, APS, blood test
  • Document the above information in CAS underwriting notes.
  • Conduct AML checks and when result is positive to liaise with NB’s AML Officer or Chief Underwriter
  • Discuss complex cases with more senior underwriter or medical consultant
  • Underwrite medical and complex cases within the approval authority, including cases referred by junior Underwriters.
  • Underwrite medical and complex cases, beyond the approval authority with the proposed underwriting decision to be approved  by the Team Leader or underwriter with higher authority limit or the Chief Underwriter
  • Possess basic knowledge of all insurance plans, riders, policy provisions and company policies.
  • For sub-standard cases, provide the loading and generate rated proposal and letter.
  • Prepare declined, postponed/deferred letter to include the refund check, if applicable

HANDLING OF INQUIRY CASES

  • Check completeness of submitted documents
  • Conduct alpha search and consolidate total risks
  • Assess cases and forward notice requirement to agents thru email.
  • When payment is made for cases with final decision, information will be encoded in CAS (NB Admin) and case will be issued.

PENDING CASES

  • Ensure all pending cases are properly filed on daily basis. 
  • Match incoming requirements to respective files.
  • Re-assess cases with new evidences provided.
  • Send notification mail to agents on status of pending case.

HANDLING OF RATED CASES

  • Calculate premium loading based on the substandard mortality rate provided by Actuarial
  • Update System, and Generate rated proposal
  • Prepare the exclusion endorsement to be signed by the proposed insured, if applicable
  • Send the rated proposal and exclusion, if any, to agent and his manager.  Ensure details in the letters are accurate.

HANDLE WALK IN / EMAIL / TELEPHONE INQUIRY

  • Entertain walk-in inquiries and assist to resolve their concerns
  • Looks beyond customers’ immediate request and offers other helpful information or assistance.
  • Answer politely phone call  inquiries
  • Respond to email inquiries daily

RETURNED CHECK TO APPLY TO NEW POLICY

  • Check the correct Policy No. of the refund check.
  • Review stop payment and cross entry form.
  • Ensure that payment was transferred to the new Policy Number.

PARTICIPATION in Monthly Case Discussion

  • Participate in monthly case discussion to identify and implement Continuous Improvement items.

TRAINING

  • Provides training to Underwriters
  • Provides training to distributors on underwriting topics

 COMPANY PRESENTATION

  • Actively participate in seminars and other activities sponsored by Manulife.
  • Actively participate in seminars and others related activities by insurance affiliated 
  • Associations/organizations.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of business practices in relation to existing regulatory requirements.
  • Possess basic knowledge of all insurance plans, riders, policy provisions and company policies.

 OTHERS

  • Acts as a consultant and resource for Underwriter Trainee, 1,2 & 3 on unusual or complex situations and co-signs cases
  • Support Marketing/Agency activities
  • Complete case reviews
  • Other functions or tasks that may be assigned or delegated from time to time

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in either Social Science/Sociology, Medical Science, Nursing or its equivalent
  • LOMA or ALU certification is a plus

Knowledge/Experience

  • 3 - 5 years underwriting experience
  • Achieving at least 90% agreement rating from a self-audit case review at the end of that period
  • Strong Leadership Skills with experience in supervising a team
  • Strength of character to provide recommendations or communicate issues
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the team and other departments

Skills & Abilities

  • Have certification in LOMA, AALU and FALU are an advantage
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Proficient in English - both verbal and written
