Ingredion is hiring an experienced Protein Fortification Applications Scientist to lead and support New Product Development, Process Improvement, Customer Solutions, and Applied Research Projects related to development of plant-based protein ingredients and their applications. Working closely with multi-functional teams, they will contribute to the development of differentiated protein ingredients, value proposition development, applications/formulations, and successful commercialization of those products. The Associate will design and conduct experiments, collaborate with external partners and internal teams to lead and execute projects, seek and pursue opportunities for IP to support business growth and customer innovation. They will regularly update project status to key stakeholders and external partners as well.  The Associate, will be responsible for transferring fundamental technical knowledge in plant-based protein space into category applications and formulation know-how, and help support building Protein fortification technical excellence and thought leadership within the organization that will help Ingredion win in the marketplace. The candidate will work along with the team leader to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of multiple applications while further building capabilities.

As an Applications Scientist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the development of Protein Fortification portfolio as aligned with our business and technical strategy in collaboration with category applications to translate customer needs to functional product requirements.
  • Serving as key global technical resource for identification, development, evaluation, and commercialization of new ingredients derived from pulses or other plant-based proteins.
  • Designing and conducting experiments to fully explore the potential application of new and existing ingredients from pulses or other plant-based proteins.
  • Interpreting data to understand relationships between structure/function and applications performance.
  • Providing status updates, project plans & milestones and outcomes to team and key stakeholders with solid recommendations.
  • Collaborating with external/internal partners for ingredient characterization and development.
  • Providing ongoing technical support to customers and regional teams (customer visits, general technical service support, application testing, and trials) on protein portfolio globally.
  • Working with Applications, Marketing and Technical Service Teams to formulate and demonstrate the value of the pulse product range (including flours, starches and proteins) in food and beverage applications.
  • Interact and collaborate broadly and effectively with business segment leaders, key technology functions , including Process Innovation and Development, Advanced Research Chemistry, Analytical Characterization and Texture Science, Sensory, Marketing, Technical Service, Sales and Finance to support business development.
  • Preparing and delivering high quality internal and external training documentations, presentations, and technical documentation to demonstrate and communicate product performance and Ingredion capabilities.
  • Proactively seeking and pursuing IP opportunities to protect Ingredion’s stake in new and promising ingredients and applications.
  • Staying abreast of technology environment (established & emerging technologies, market trends, IP landscape). Conducting prior art searches (literature, patents) and developing and applying for patents.
  • Developing industry relationships and networks with professional organizations (IFT, etc) and experts in specific science and technology areas of interest.
  • Operate lab/pilot plant equipment safely as part of project execution efforts; maintain a clean, safe work environment; following guidelines for good housekeeping and safety

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.S.) in Food Science or other relevant field with several (3-5+) years of relevant work experience in product formulation, prototype development, pulse ingredient development.  B.S. in Food Science with significant experience with protein product development will also be considered.
  • Proven in-depth knowledge of proteins and protein chemistry, as well as processing.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in project management, including project ownership across the life-cycle of a project, from conception to completion.
  • Hands-on application development using laboratory equipment, pilot plant equipment, plant equipment and scale-up.
  • Proven in-depth knowledge in food and beverage formulations and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate fundamental technical knowledge about plant proteins into applications know-how.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead/lead through influence, effectively collaborate, in a diverse setting and under tight timelines, and show agility to shifting priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills e.g. making high impact presentations internally and to customers and writing technical reports. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with designing experiments and statistical data analysis for the appropriate interpretation of results.
  • A high degree of energy, personal commitment, and ownership, thinking out of the box, open to offer and accept new ideas, and willing to continuously learn
  • Ability to travel up to 20% to visit customers, run tests at external facilities, and visit/collaborate with other Ingredion facilities globally.
