Job Summary
Sam Schwartz is seeking a candidate to support the growth of the transportation safety practice, with a particular focus on Vision Zero and safety action planning; policy development; Complete Streets and quick-build design and implementation; and inclusive community engagement. The candidate will serve as both an internal and external leader for our safety practice area, helping to grow Sam Schwartz’s influence and market share of that practice area. They will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of consultants (planning, transportation engineering, data analytics, civil engineering, etc.) across all offices to lead and advise on a wide variety of planning and design projects as well as the business strategy for the practice area.
Ideal candidates will be strategic and solutions-focused, with the ability to foresee opportunities for growth; they will be client-facing and articulate, with the ability to communicate persuasively and develop positive team dynamics; and they will have demonstrated experience managing complex projects, including the ability to understand and anticipate bigger-picture client and business needs while successfully managing day-to-day project demands. The ideal candidate should also possess knowledge of federal infrastructure laws, funding programs, and policies, as well as fundamental principles of transportation equity and environmental justice.
Responsibilities will include serving as one of the firm’s internal knowledge lead on safety, Vision Zero, and Complete Streets; serving as a project manager leading complex projects and project tasks; leading and supporting project proposals; and supporting industry involvement and thought leadership.
This position may be filled in New York City, Chicago, or Los Angeles.

- Develop a strategy to maintain and grow the safety planning practice, anticipating market trends and identifying opportunities for growth;
- Set practice goals for sales, project types, and/or geographies and develop an action plan to meet those goals
- Lead and oversee safety and Vision Zero projects, managing project budgets and schedules
- Build tools, procedures, or analyses that set our practice apart from competitors and ensure consistency of products internally
- Provide staff mentorship to team, including sharing technical expertise, professional development advice and helping to guide staff growth
- Assist with workload planning, identifying gaps in staffing, and lead recruiting efforts to fill gaps
- Supervise a team of staff, ensuring adequate capabilities and capacity, and anticipating succession planning needs
- Foster and maintain strong client relationships
- Represent the firm through thought leadership at conferences, professional organizations, and through social media
- Lead business development activities (preparing proposal responses, pursuing intelligence activities) nationwide
- Contribute to strategic planning for the national planning practice
- Travel to client sites and company offices as necessary
Skills and Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Experience managing transportation planning projects, including management of staff, subconsultants, and budgets
- Strong understanding of current and emerging industry best practices and ability to speak authoritatively on those topics
- Strong client and partner relationships
- Involvement in relevant national organizations (APA, TRB, ITE, Vision Zero Network, or others as relevant)
- Knowledge of industry guidelines and standards (e.g. MUTCD, NACTO, HCM, AASHTO, and other relevant guidelines)
- Ability to envision opportunities for growth and implement an action plan
- Ability to lead, motivate and mentor staff
Requirements
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- 15+ years of experience in the transportation industry, with a focus on safety practices, policy, data analysis, and roadway design
- Master’s degree in urban planning, civil engineering, or other related field
- AICP certification strongly preferred
