Job Description Summary:

We are looking for a director of engineering to join PayPal to manage a larger part of our engineering organization. PayPal in Sweden originated from Zettle, focusing on commerce services targeting small and medium businesses, and are now expanding to contribute to the wider PayPal portfolio.

You will manage an organization of 4-10 teams, and will act as a coach and/or manager for team engineering managers, helping them grow in their roles. You will appoint/hire and train team leaders, and help lead building a strong engineering culture. You are responsible for delivery, quality, architecture, compliance, and the business success of your services.

Customer-facing solutions are a mix of iOS/Android native and web, and our backend is Node and Java running on AWS. You will be part of the engineering leadership team and will partner with other leaders to ensure that your teams are well supported and unobstructed in pursuit of their goals.

A candidate must have a strong technical background and be able to work hands-on when needed, as well as strong leadership skills.

In your day to day role you will: 

·       Set the vision and strategy for your organisation in partnership with Design and Product leaders 

·       Build, grow, and retain an excellent engineering team to innovate, invent, and deploy best-in-class software and frameworks. Develop and grow this talent through effective mentoring and coaching. 

·       Assure the availability, scalability, and performance of frameworks and software your team delivers 

·       Provide technical leadership: articulate high-level technical strategy, encourage technical discussions, apply good principles for software development, and facilitate code reviews to drive the shipping of quality code into production and other development efforts. 

·       Define goals, OKRs, KPIs, SLAs and drive continuous improvements in velocity, quality and issue management 

·       Participate in establishing and improving a strong engineering culture in Stockholm, including hiring, performance assessments, career development, inclusion & diversity and technical and operational excellence

 

Experience requirements: 

·       Proven experience managing a team of engineering managers.

·       Hands-on experience as a software developer, in native mobile, Java and/or JavaScript, with experience across multiple layers of the application stack 

·       Advanced knowledge in software architecture from mobile app development, web applications and/or Node or Java backends 

·       Experience of AWS is a strong plus 

·       Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholders across multiple functions 

·       Experience from fintech or retail sector strong plus 

·       Experience with Agile, scrum, Kanban and commonly used tools like jira and github are required 

·       Experience in software lifecycle including release planning, time estimates, release processes, software testing, incident and issue management, monitoring & alerting and related 

·       Self-motivated and self-directed with a passion for excellence in product and people
