Job Description Summary:

As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions, that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The CSFA performs, under direct supervision, intraoperative technically advanced functions. Responsible for aiding the professional nurse or physician in providing optimal patient care, addressing age specific needs, in the assigned single operating room in a surgical assistant capacity or assisting the physician on the floor or clinic. The employee is responsible for providing patient care for assigned shift as scheduled full time or part time. Employee is under the supervision of the Clinical Manager. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of principles of asepsis ensuring that proper techniques and practices are maintained, in providing age-specific patient care.
  • Surgical wound closure under the direction of the surgeon; may facilitate the closure of the skin layer by proper handling of the tissue with forceps.
  • During endoscopic procedures, the CSFA may advance the rigid endoscope to provide optimal visualization under the broad authority of the surgeon.
  • Actively participates in correct sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Insures proper handling of all lab and tissue specimens according to established protocol.
  • Assumes responsibility for proper handling, sterilization and stocking of supplies as needed.
  • Assists with identifying needed supplies and prepares equipment, packs and room for patient and procedure, addressing age-specific patient care needs.
  • Relieves on cases at or during change of shift, breaks, or meal times, following correct protocol, to insure continuity of care.
  • Assists with table and room clean up following procedure, and prepares room for the next procedure within scheduled allocated times.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Skill and proficiency in the technical field of surgical first assist.  Such proficiency as acquired through the completion of the CSFA certification process.   

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • CSFA: Certified Surgical First Assist required.  This certification is obtained through The National Board or Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (See NBSTSA website). Current BLS Certification  

EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to scrub during surgical cases as acquired through three months of departmental education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of hospital and department policies and procedures, surgical procedures, instruments, equipment, documentation policies and knowledge of documentation programs.
