The Senior Database Administrator manages and controls the company's data resources, develops application data models and implements physical database designs. This position also assumes responsible for data integrity, security and recovery. They will work closely with the application development teams to ensure correct database design and efficient application access. The successful candidate will also work with the network and system administrators to ensure overall system and database availability and performance.

  • The Senior Database Administrator role will provide operational and technical database expertise for enterprise SQL and Oracle environments.  This role will work within the Managed Services Database Team.  The Senior DBA will work closely with other team members to ensure operational availability, recoverability, performance, integrity and security of the databases. The role will work collaboratively with support teams and other areas of IT.  

 

The Senior DBA will provide support and guidance to junior members and will have a high degree of database knowledge and expertise. It is expected that the role will learn and adapt to new database technologies and Azure products, as they are introduced to Markel. Training will be given where required. 

  • Performs engineering and administrative duties for Microsoft SQL, Oracle DB, Azure Synapse as well as maintains integrations with technologies and other Markel applications. 

  • Build strong partnerships with Markel’s Data Services, Data Backbone, and other data providers within Markel’s application organizations. 

  • Partners with managed services provider engineers to perform operational support and project activities. 

  • Performs change management using standard tools. Ensures conformance and compliance with existing system standards. Measures performance to ensure proper operation. 

  • Applies architectural analysis, design, modelling, and best practice techniques, based upon a detailed understanding of business processes, to establish, modify or maintain database servers and associated components. 

  • Works with Global Security Services compliance team to ensure Markel’s database landscape meets security and governance standards as well as adhering to the hardening policies, backup retention policies, all other company policies and audit requirements. 

  • Participate in after-hours critical production support as required. 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Certification

• Microsoft or Oracle certification preferred.

• ITIL Certification or experience working in an ITIL environment preferred.

Work Experience

• Extensive experience providing technical delivery of large projects working with

stakeholders from business, development and infrastructure teams.

• Experience of business critical systems, and 24/7 support.

• Experience of administering development and test database environments. • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS required. • Experience with Oracle RDBMS 11g, 12c, 19c, Oracle RMAN preferred. • Understanding of Relational Database Management System architecture and how it relates to the organization’s application landscape. • Experience with Nutanix Era/NDB a plus. • Understanding of backup and restore processes required, knowledge of Dell DDBoost/Pure Storage or Veeam a plus. • Demonstration of thorough understanding of how discrete infrastructure components work together to provide reliable and secure hosting environment. • Experience working with Cloud technologies including Azure SQL PaaS a plus. • Understanding of RDBMS security best practices and how to implement in an enterprise environment.
