Summary of Job Duties:

The Pre-Registration Specialist works under supervision and provides comprehensive support for finance and patient care activities by collecting patient intake documents ahead of the appointment which saves time and reduces paperwork. Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering inbound/outbound calls, collecting patient demographics, which include personal demographics, employment, guarantor, emergency contact information and insurance information. This position is the network specialist for understanding patient insurance.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED plus two (2) years of experience in customer service or healthcare
  • Ability to follow oral instruction, read and write
  • Computer/basic keyboard skills, telephone etiquette skills, and general knowledge of office machines including printers and scanners
  • Excellent customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in general studies or related
  • One year in medical office setting
  • Knowledge in basic medical terminology preferred, medical terminology competent within 3 months of hire


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

•    Interacts with and assists the public in a professional and friendly manner, virtually
•    Conducts pre-registration, inputs and/or updates accurate patient information
•    Conducts insurance verification and benefit explanation by running eligibility on patients, requesting outside records and gathering outside medical records from referrals 
•    Files patient charts as needed
•    Understands insurance plan codes and has the ability to work with patient to ensure correct information is placed on appropriate Epic account
•    Recognizes out of network plans and refers the case to a pre-registration specialist II or supervisor
•    Adds insurance information to patient files and changes insurance plans and codes as needed
•    Contacts insurance companies to discuss worker compensation coverage, pre-approved visits and any other coverage issues and be able to communicate to the patient what coverage UAMS is accepting as in network
•    Maintains initial plan of care and responsible for recording daily and monthly statistics and communication of any medical records issues which can include PCP referrals, information from insurance companies
•    Attends required training and/or in-services
•    Attends staff meetings and participates in the orientation and/or training of new staff
•    Participates in annual educational needs assessment 
•    Maintains required job skills competencies and completes skill assessments annually, competes and maintains documents of continuing education hours annually
•    Performs other duties as assigned
