Summary of Job Duties:

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory will be responsible for performing a variety of high complexity Molecular based testing in PCR or FISH, including both automated and manual testing. This position requires the MLS II to be able to organize and prioritize workload and work independently. Demonstrate technical expertise on various Molecular processes such as the ability to make critical decisions about results, QC and maintenance issues. Provides departmental support and performs additional duties or projects as assigned to assist their supervisor. As a bench technologist in Molecular Diagnostics, this person must also be responsible for processing, evaluating and triaging patient specimens, performing tests in PCR or FISH according to written procedures. This person will also record and evaluate daily, weekly, and monthly QC in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor and Medical Director. This position requires one to maintain safe work practices, follow all regulatory requirements, be familiar with all procedures in the department and engage supervisor, manager, and Medical Director as appropriate.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Cytotechnology, Molecular Biology or an ASCP approved discipline.

  • 2 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory

  • ASCP Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification (CLS), Medical Technologist (MT) certification, Cytogenetics, (CG) certification, Cytotechnologist (CT) certification or Molecular Biology (MB) certification

  • Knowledge of testing methods currently in use in a Molecular Biology Laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Cytotechnology

  • 3-5 years of experience in a Molecular Biology Laboratory.

  • ASCP Specialist in Molecular Biology (SMB)

  • Manual FISH analysis and or Manual PCR testing and analysis

  • Leads training for new employees, students, and residents and performs employee competencies as assigned.
  • Serves as a resource to assist other technologists in the Microbiology Laboratory.
  • Maintains all aspects of quality control and quality assurance, assesses for acceptability, and takes corrective action as required.
  • Performs testing of patient samples, interprets, reviews, and prepares patient test results for review by the Supervisor and/or Medical Director. Interacts with staff from various departments to coordinate the proper acquisition, testing, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Assists Medical Director and supervisor with analyzing and implementing new tests.
  • Performs additional studies as required for quality assurance initiatives, research support or verification/validation of new equipment or methods.
  • Completes validation and verification of new instrumentation and testing. Ensures the accuracy of instrument calibration and that preventative maintenance is performed.
