Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a Senior Optomechanical Engineer with a track record of working alongside physicists in experimental atomic, molecular and optical design. As a member of the Engineering and Technology team at IonQ, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary group whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

This is a career-level professional position at IonQ.  You will be part of the team researching new technologies for future generations of our quantum computers.

Responsibilities:

  • Optomechanical design, modeling, drafting assembly, and characterization of the optical components, mounts and subsystems represented in a trapped ion quantum computer
  • Performing basic material, structural, thermal and tolerance analyses
  • Commitment to daily, in-the-lab hands-on participation in an interdisciplinary team of engineers and physicists dedicated to the improvement of quantum computing system performance
  • Educating and ability for clear communication with others regarding optomechanical architectural concerns and proposed solutions
  • Commitment to prototyping, validation and refinement of design, from concept to manufacturable product
  • Ownership of a complete and accurate Solidworks CAD model using PDM
  • BOM generation and ECO release of parts
  • Liaison to component vendors, materials suppliers, machine shops and related services

You’d be a good fit with:

  • BS or MS in mechanical engineering or related field

  • Working familiarity with materials and coatings employed in optics components and systems
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 7+ years experience in transforming designs from initial concept through assembly, debug, and release to manufacture
  • Experience working with lasers, optics testbeds and fiber optics
  • Experience with ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Experience with actuated alignment mirrors and stages for precision optics
  • Experience with ion traps, ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic system design
  • Experience in the alignment of optical systems and running of optical experiments
