Position Overview

Director, Development is responsible for designing and executing the Development strategy that will allow City Year to leverage the resources, talents, and skills of the philanthropic sector to build the site and create change in communities across the city.

Job Description

City Year Greater Boston is seeking a driven Individual Giving Director who will drive strategy for and lead efforts to secure financial support from individuals in support of our mission. They will partner with other development team members, senior leaders, volunteers, and board members to achieve an annual personal targeted revenue goal by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a diverse base of donors. The Director is expected to spend the majority of their time in field meetings and interfacing with key constituents and prospects to generate revenue from the community. They will stay well-informed of the current philanthropic climate and demonstrate the importance of investing in City Year. They will also play a crucial role in partnering with Development & Site Leadership in the creation and execution of the next generation of our highly successful individual giving development program. In total, the Development Team is currently responsible for securing ~$7M in support from individual, corporate, and foundation sources annually, with plans to increase to $10M over the next three to five years.

What You’ll Do  

 

Drive Strategy & Results: 

  • Partner with team members to develop and execute multi-channel strategies designed to grow and diversify donor-base and engage and retain existing donors  

  • Work collaboratively with leadership to support and leverage meetings with champions and potential donors   

  • Develop and launch new giving and stewardship programs to engage donor audiences 

  • Analyze giving data and identify and draw on trends that will inform strategies and regularly evaluate the ongoing improvement of fundraising ROI  

 

Engage Donors & Prospects: 

  • Develop and cultivate relationships to secure financial support and reach the fundraising objectives and revenue targets from a portfolio of 250-300 mid-level donors and prospects 

  • Move portfolio donors to increasingly higher levels of giving, collaborating with the Major Gifts Officer as needed 

  • Grow the pipeline of prospects, including families and their children as appropriate, to generate donor relationships 

  • Build engaging donor journeys and campaigns through a variety of touchpoints 

  • Ensure donors realize an outstanding philanthropic experience through their charitable investment of time and financial support 

  • Collaborate with volunteer Board(s) and/or Event Committee(s) that support organizational goals 

  • Engage in external activities to understand and react to philanthropic and donor trends and effectively incorporates these into the plans 

  • Maintain accurate records and achieve monthly targets on donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities 

  • Attend volunteer events and corporate service events and utilize post-event surveys to generate individual giving leads  

 

Manage Donor Committees and Volunteer Groups 

  • In partnership with Development team members, contribute to an updated committee and volunteer engagement strategy 

  • Manage volunteer committees including the Seven Generations Associate Board, Investment Community Event Committee, and Women’s Leadership Event Committee 

  • Build relationships with committee members and provide exceptional stewardship, direction, and guidance to support them in achieving their goals 

  • Identify and engage new prospects to join committees 

 

Support Organizational Initiatives & the Site: 

  • Stay apprised of local and national trends in national service, public education, education equity, and philanthropy 

  • Partner with other departments and staff to ensure that site-wide goals are met, including, but not limited to, fundraising, the AmeriCorps member applicant interview process, stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation, and cross-departmental committees 

  • Support and attend all major site events, including fundraisers, service days, trainings, and other activities and initiatives 

  • Attend internal and external engagement and training activities throughout the year 

 

What You’ll Bring: 

  • Five+ years experience in an individual giving fundraising role, with proven ability to achieve revenue goals and secure 5-figure gifts  

  • Demonstrated experience working with a team to achieve revenue goals 

  • Deep understanding of individual and family philanthropy, and experience with or understanding of planned giftsa plus 

  • Experience working with a Board and volunteer groups 

  • Ability to develop and execute compelling and winning proposals and campaigns 

  • Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills; high level of attention to detail  

  • Awareness and experience in engaging in conversation about race and all aspects of identity 

  • Strong connection to City Year’s mission, education equity and to the values of belief in the power of young people, social justice, empathy, inclusivity, and teamwork  

  • Ability to work the flexible hours demanded of a deadline-driven position, including occasional nights and weekends 

  • Ability to adapt and excel in diverse, high energy, entrepreneurial, and rapidly changing environment 

 

This position is located in Boston, Massachusetts and is a hybrid role with 3 in-person days per week. In-person days can be at the office, at external meetings with stakeholders, at a school, and/or attending events. The compensation range for this position is $85,000-$95,000, commensurate with experience.
