Veterinary Technician

Experienced Veterinary Assistant

Alamo Area Veterinary Clinic

The Veterinary Technician/Assistant will be responsible for assisting the practice with a variety of duties including but not limited to:

  • Assisting veterinarians during exams, surgeries and other medical procedures; monitoring and caring for animals before, during and after procedures
  • Handling and restraining animals in a calm and compassionate manner.
  • Prepare exam rooms and surgical areas, restocking hospital with supplies.
  • Cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment; wrapping surgical packs/instruments.
  • Prepare exam rooms and surgical areas with the necessary supplies.
  • Educating pet owners on various products, food and diseases
  • Placing IV catheters; blood draws from cephalic, saphenous and jugular veins
  • Running bloodwork in house on Idexx Catalyst machines
  • Taking x-rays
  • Knowledge of Avimark preferred, but not necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of patient care and treatment
  • Prepping and reading of cytology including skin, ears, fecal and urine
  • Cleaning cages, kennels, exam rooms and surgical facilities; maintaining cleanliness of surgical instruments; maintaining cleanliness of clinic premises.

Requirements:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have 1 year experience as a veterinary technician/assistant
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes emotionally charged environment
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions closely
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new veterinary procedures and technologies
  • LVT or CVA preferred, but not necessary
  • Must be comfortable working and restraining cats and dogs
  • Must be comfortable around blood and surgical procedures
  • Have excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds alone
  • Must have reliable transportation

This is a very physical job that requires standing, stooping and walking for extended periods of time.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Full-time position, 4 days a week 7:45am-5:30pm with 1 hour lunch

Pay is based on experience and licensure, starting at $16.00 hour.
